This is a question that gets asked over and over again by many people who are starting to mod their aleros or other n-bodies.
First of all, this question really can not be answered with any degree of decisiveness. There are hundreds of mods available for us... so it really depends on your personal tastes, and what you are looking to do.
I think the most common performance mod would be to install a cold air intake. APOC, FDP, Dr. Speed, Induction Dynamics, and others makde CAI's for our cars, and you need to find one that suits your budget and engine.
Probably the second most common performance mod would be a custom exhaust system. Both SLP and Borla make catback systems that will fit our cars, and both are stainless steel systems with lifetime warranties. The SLP is a little more aggessive-sounding and also a little cheaper. Many of our members have also opted to get a custom setup made for their cars with Flowmaster, Magnaflow, and other mufflers. All these systems work well, and it is really a matter of taste and budget which option to pick.
As far as appearance goes, probably the most common mod is to upgrade the rims and tires.
Intrax, ST, Sprint, Eibach, and H&R all make lowering springs.
KYB makes pretty good struts.

Appearance isnt first?? smack
If your going to appearance its based mostly on your budget, There are intelliglow needs from APOC, (americanperformanceofcolorado.com) or the halo or indiglo gauges that naich here offers on group buys.
New shifters are common or my switch panel (cheap plug yea yea), repainting the interior trim peices or buying a trim kit is resonably priced
Stereo is endless and along with rims.

For looks with the Alero, first go with the clear corners mod, it's relatively easy and costs next to nothing if you do it by yourself.

you can peel the rubber off the knobs on the 99's to reveal blue clear plastic knobs that look neat.

Dont know if this is still read, but the first thing I did was install the auto/drl remover and halo guage kit, but that broke on me so now I am installing blue LEDs in the cluster, cost me $7 for 10 of them, they are the defuser type and look pretty nice, and very cheap. I just need to tint my windows and clear the corners and I think I will be alright!

First mod I did was painting interior trim w/LED install in the Vents (i figured they went hand in hand if it's something you planned on doing anyways) Then rear badges, then a small system (AFtermarket deck w/10" pioneer and amp) and so on and so forth......................you get the idea.
I yeah I would say its got allot to do w/personal preference, and well budget has a big role in there as well (at least on my end)
