Installing 6.5's in the front of a 4 door
I'm installing (trying) 6.5's in my front doors. This is a 4 door car, not sure if this makes a diff but if it does I'm sure it's for the worse.
I bought the plastic adaptors from ebay ... probably not worth it. The Eclipse 6.5's I want to mount are actually 6-1/4 (WTF?). So I had to cut a ring out of 3/4" mdf anyways.
Still, I needed the 1/4" thick base plate from the plastice e-bayer's (not a total loss). My Eclipse speakers are not overly deep, about 2-1/8". As seen in the first picture you have about 1" depth in the door between the window track and the sheet metal. The adaptor gives me another inch. So, these speakers SHOULD fit.
However the door panel is hitting them and that's not good. Noting that the speaker, when mounted, sticks out 3/16's beyond the mounting plate. One option is to use the marginal 6.5's I have for the rear (the silver speaker in the picture) with shallow spacers or (which I'm doign tomorrow) start cutting out some of the overlapping plastic on the back side of the door panel. One of the pictures below shows that there is only about 1" clearence at the tightest point.
I think I should be able to find the clearence I need.
