So I've got my Metra kit that keeps the chimes and I'm putting in an old aftermarket HU I had sitting around. I pulled this from my previous car, and it worked then... maybe it doesn't work anymore (but it powers up)?

Anyway... so I connect the Metra wire kit between the factory wire harness and the HU wire harness. The Metra red (power) wire from their little chime box to the red wire on the HU wire harness, same with the yellow to yellow and black to black (yellow and black both run to a fuse box on the aftermarket wire harness).

I then connected the speaker connectsion from the aftermarket HU wire harness to the Metra kit (color to color and color/black to color/black). I've got four sets of hookups then: green, white, grey, and purple (with the black stripe wires there are 8 total connections).

I don't need the antena lead as there is no power antena, so nothing goes there from the aftermarket HU wire harness.

I plugged everything in, the chimes work, and the deck turns on... but no sound. I've checked the fader, balance, and volume on the HU, and all is fine there.

I still have 3 wires coming from the Metra to Factory connection that have nothing to them. Two orange wires, and one blue/white wire. I can't seem to figure out what they are for... but does this have something to do with me not getting sound?

First time I've tried to hook up a stereo before. I've done speakers and amps before, and wired a house... this shouldn't be that hard, but something isn't work out right here.

Anyone have some ideas, besides telling me I'm dumb? (HA, Ha, ha)

Thanks.

The two orange wires are for the dimmer which your aftermarket HU may not have (most $200 to $250 and up models do). The extra blue wire, which I am assuming is coming from the aftermarket HU wiring harness is for an amp. If it is coming from the Metra wiring harness then it is the antenna booster (This is from memory so I may have that wrong but I know for sure the blue wire is for the amp). These wires have nothing to do with the sound so there may be a problem with the HU or possibly the wiring harness. Hate to say this but from researching the Metra harness, I have seen that these harnesses have had problems. I have not found any specifics (read this on j body and s-10 forums) but I would not think that it would have anything to do with the sound.

The only thing I can say is make sure you have all the wires right, put in a cd, and mess with the volume, fader, and balance again. Maybe someone else will have some ideas.

You were right about the wires. I did some looking around today and the orange from the Metra connector are for the dimmer, and the blue is for the antena lead or amp (don't remember, but I saw it's not speakers).

Still no luck on sound. I might go out and pick up a new HU tonight and drop it in and see if it works. If that doesn't work, then I know it's the wire harness at least.

Thanks for the tips... just need some tunes from the car now!

Make sure the internal amp is turned on. If you had your speakers run from an amp before, it may be off. I know on my alpine, there is a setting to turn the interal speaker outs on and off.

Thanks for the advice... but I'm running the stock Monsoon system, so the only amp is the one in the trunk from Oldsmobile.

I've got no sound at all.. not on the front or rear speakers. That seems odd to me as I should at least get sound from the front. I think the Class II system turns on the amp, so I was thinking that the rears might not turn on... but I've got nothing still.

Heading out of the country in a few days for a week, but will work on it when I get back.

Hook the blue wire up to the remote ant lead on the radio as I belive the lead is used to triggger on the amps for the monsoon system. I had that problem in my sisters Malibu and after playing around with it it suddenly worked so I think it has to do with the blue wire for the factory side.
