If You dont want to go through thr hassle of relocating the stock head unit just to retain the chimes, just purchase a chime module for approx. $70.00. Then You can sell the stock HU to recover the cost of the chime module.

Well I just went to a local car audio shop and they told me that since I dont have RDS I do not have to relocate the HU. I have a 2003 and from everything I've read I have to. So whats the deal with this. I have the basic set up from the factory so do I have to relocate or not?

You don't have RDS, but you still have to do something if you want to retain the chimes. Even the Non-RDS radio's in 2003+ Alero's still act as the Chimes.

In an '03 Alero, the radio acts as the chime module. You can get cheap ($20) wiring harnesses like every other car, but you lose the chime and it interrupts your serial data bus. You also have to find another source of true 12 volt power. The expensive kit has a chime module on it already and also provides a 12 volt connection, which simplifies the whole deal a lot.

So in other words your telling me that if I get this $70 wiring harness, it is exactly the same as relocating the stock headunit and I dont lose anything or interupt my serial data bus? Then why would anyone relocate their stock hu if it is this easy.

Ok... I'm with TLM here... what do you guys mean by chimes? Not only that, but a serial data bus? Again, I'm lost... can anyone provide any clarification as to what those two terms mean?

Thanks...

Chime = "ding ding" -- your key is still inthe ignition
or
"ding ding ding ding" -- it's time to change your oil.

I didn't really miss my chimes. I really did notice them once I went back to stock radio though..

I thought the same thing when this guy told me about relocating my stock HU...why do I need 2 damn radios. Anyways he got the part that I needed so I wouldn't have to relocate stock HU. My chimes are alot louder then they used to be, but now I am used to it. I don't know how much they are but he got me it for about 50$.

If he didnt give you a Metra interface then he cut you a good deal because any other brand will range from $75-$100. Mine was $79 at a local car audio shop.
