motor compatibility

so, motor number two has ridiculous rod knock now, and i'm looking to drop in a new short block with my modified top end.
There's a guy on jbo selling a 99 short block out of a cavalier. i know that some years had balance shafts, but i'm not sure what that means as far as compatibility. if i buy this short block, will i be able to transplant it into my 2000? a garage would be doing the work, but i need to pull together the parts, and this was the most cost effective. Please let me know.

For the best compatibility, just make sure it was not a EGR equipped 2.4. The 2.4 w/EGR uses a different knock sensor (1 wire) compared to your non-EGR 2.4 (2-wire)

You could probably use a thread insert to adapt it to your smaller threads if you wanted. As far as I know, that's the only difference compatibility wise over the years.

All the 2.4s have balance shafts.

ignorant kansan? you don't call your stater motor a starter engine do you? an engine is a collection of components that work together to make mechanical energy

a motor converts electrical energy to mechanical energy with one simple movement.

an engine converts chemical to mechanical with a series of movements.

I'm sorry if thats to much for you to grasp and I offended you. no need to call names here

actually you are partially correct...an engine is solely powered by combustion, a motor is anything that produces a rotating mass to power something, it doesn't matter what it uses to rotate that mass

It would not be a good thing to disable the knock sensor. Without that IMPORTANT feedback the ECM may decide to advance spark way beyond what it should be, leading to serious pre-ignition and engine damage.

Simple work around - use one of the intake manifold bolts to secure the knock sensor to the engine. The wiring reaches that far easily and the vibration gets registered just fine.

As for the EGR issue - Most newer exhaust gaskets block the port off anyhow. If not just get a small freeze plug and tap it into the open port on the front of the head.

EGR is totally a non-issue. That's just the easiest way to identify the engines with the different knock sensor.

As said, disabling it is a bad thing... x100 with the supercharger.... unless you can have a perfect tune and consistent fuel. So basically for racecars.

in my 2001 car I was using a 98 motorset & modified the knock sensor mount by welding a nut to the back of the block in the original location. Worked like a charm.

the only reason i say that, is because on my old xterra, they had overreactive knock sensors, and everyone just puts a resistor in line. didn't know if it would be the same

i'll probably end up doing the nut welding thing. sounds like the easiest route.

i'm also possibly purchasing some other engine parts from this guy. He's got a Dart racing head that he wants to sell. Has anyone heard of these? are they any good?

Quite honestly, the thread insert that Heineck posted would probably be the easiest...

You won't be able to use them without some hellish time retuning your shit.
