I am partial to the Kenwood but I really dont know a heck of a lot about car audio anymore so what does evryone else think?

The kenwood obviously has a lot more bling features like the touch screen and nav package but I hear the quality of the eclipse is second to none.

Another score for the Kenwood is that it will play MP3 DVDs which would be cool but the eclipse will read Sony mem sticks and I have a few 1GB sticks...

I like the 8 preamp volts of the eclipse, and i would personally go for that, but you don't get a monitor, so i'd say get the kenwood

It depends on what you are looking for in the Head unit. If you want sound quality with exceptional flexability in tailoring your sound, then look into the eclipse. If you want a in dash dvd system them look toward the Kenwood. As far as sound goes, the eclipse will be one of the best Head Units you can place into the car. While no manufacturer makes the perfect Head Unit, eclipse has consistantly been known for extremely accurate sounding reproductions. The eight volt consits of a 24 bit DAC that utiliizes a digital signal from cd to pre-out. A very extensive array of graphic and even 3 parametric eq's on board. The DSP in the head unit is a real DSP unlike most manufactures that market a simple bass, treble, and mid section presetts as a Digital Signal Processor. The memory stick's primary function is to allow the user to take a sound analysis (with on board mic) and upload it to the eclipse website. There, the website will tailor your eq to the cars accoustics. If you are interested in a in dash dvd system with exceptional sound reproduction then look toward the eclipse double din with internal 5.1 processing. It contains the same dual processor, 24 bit DAC and eq as the 8 volt. It retails for 1600. If you want to go all out then look into there premiere double din that contains a 20 gig hard drive as well. As for me, I am torn between buying the double din with 5.1 (as seen in my sig) and the 8454. Due to cost and installation difficulties, the 8454 will probably be my next purchase.

I discovered something shocking last week. A double din will fit in our car with trimming. We just installed the Eclipse navigation unit a few of our tahoes and avalanches at work to demo them and they are double din units. The opening has the same dimensions in the silverado as in our aleros except our corners are odly shaped instead of squared.

I tried to point this out a while back. The determining factor for a car's din is not the opening of the trim but the size of the radio. This is due to the fact that many car manufacturers place a trim over the factory head unit. Nearly all GM vehicles incorporate a double din sized radio. We manufacture a few at work. The chevy S-10 carries the same xm radio as the Allero but has a trim with square corners opposed to the rounded on the alero. A friend of mine recently replaced his stock HU in the S-10 with the eclipse 5.1 channel double din dvd player. The swap was a ferfect fit. To say that the alero is a din and a half is a mis conception. In reality it is a double din wth a odd sized trim.
