Spun bearing sadness

Well i spun a main or rod bearing(i believe) and am gonna have to swap my ga/gt motor in early. Anyone have any hints that i should know before tearing out this motor? I have a haynes on the way for reference, but anything you guys know will help. I guess the 3.4/3.5 will have to wait until this new motor goes. oh well.

what exactly is a "spun bearing"? where is it(the "bearing"), how does it happen?

well if i read right it would be a bearing on the crank, much like my LD9 that's what happened to me there are a number of reasons it can happen mine was just my lack of checking fluids idk what his case is but there is always hope for everything

Best advice I have is when you are splitting the motor and trans double check that you get all the housing bolts out the first time. When I pulled mine I missed one and took 45 min to figure out why I couldn't split the thing apart.

you can get your crank resurfaced and micro polished.
As long as you can run your fingernail over it without it getting caught in a scratch. than you just need oversize bearings which I'm sure you can get from GM. you may as well replace all your bearings and thrust washers while your at it. Any idea what caused it? Get out a micrometer and go over the crank journals and check for out of roundness. Use plasi-gauge and check oiling clearances make sure they are within spec.. its not a hard process just follow your manual and triple check all clearances..

sorry if that is hard to read... I have spun two rod bearings and a main bearing in my short life and I was lucky enough to save the crank twice. You may just get lucky man good luck. Take some pictures for us!

Thanks all. I'll def check for all bolts thanks! And the best way for me to describe the spun bearing is where one half of the bearing gets worn enough to "slip" under the other half partially.

Also, the new motor, stock, is ready to go in. I'm just gonna have to take the mods of it, and build up the blown one now. I'm hopefully gonna find better crank and other lower end stuff anyway now.

That sucks man....any idea why this happened? Is it just wear and tear?

Actually i was expecting this from the moment i bought the car. That's why i have a spare engine. I bought the car from a man who was told it had a bent rod. I bought it, didn't believe it, and after hours on aleromod i discovered the cat was plugged. I drove the car for the last 20,000 miles with a very slight knock. I couldn't tell, but figured a wrist pin bearing. The hesitation sadly to say ended up being plug wires but that was all. Directly after fixing the hesitation, the knocking got worse. Something tells me that cylinder wasn't firing, and now it is. At any rate, i paid very little for a 2001 GLS, and the motor i got from a scrapped car. no. biggie. It had oil, good maintenance, it just couldn't hold anymore.

Our wrist pins are free floating afaik....
