I'm curious what the different benefits and side effects would be between putting in the cams from the 2.3L compared to just getting some adjustable cam gears? Don't they accomplish the same thing or am I way off on this one?

individually, you'd get minimal gains...however, depending on the gears, you could use them together and have better gains. It might be worth it if you go to the track, but probably not if you don't.

Taking about a cam is a serious thing. Pending on which cam you buy, you will have to do new heads with stiffer and higher springs.

If you don't do the heads, you many get away with a mild cam swap, but your not getting the full benifit of the cam swap

there is no adjustable cam gears for the 2.4. it's not a honda motor.

if you were to have custom ones made 2 deg is the max that would be beneficial.

the cam swap by itself adds a little but a lot more motor work is needed to harness the full potential.

might want to do some reading up on the 2.4

As Oldsman said there are no adjustable cam gears for the 2.4. I think you're off a little on how your thinking this works. If there were adjustable gears, all they do is adjust when the valves open and close, aka cam timing. Swapping to different cams, the 2.3 "secret" cams for example, which have more lift and duration than stock, push open the valves further and keep them open slightly longer than stock. This is what adds the most power as the cylinder is able to get more air and fuel inside it because the valves are opened up more. Also as Oldsman said, you will see a decent gain, but to get the full benefit of swapping cams, you'll need some head work done.

Another question then, when the valves are open further (2.3L cam swap) what is the chance of them impacting the pistons? With the cam swap would it then be necessary to upgrade the valves, valve sleeves and the valve springs? Then added to all of this, when the pistons and connceting rods are upgraded are you creating even more problems as far as clearance is concerned, or am I overthinking it?

from my understanding of it all, the 2.3 cam swap is about the most you can go without runnin into clearance issues...i'm gonna be redoin the valve springs once i find an intake cam, but god damn its hard to find

valve clearance is no issue. it is only gets close with the HO cams.
