First Time Installing Aftermarket Stereo

I just bought my 2003 Alero GLS the other day and I must say I love it. The radio didnt work but thats not a big deal as im putting in a new one anyways, and i was just wondering if i could get some pointers lol.

I have the wiring schematic and it goes as follows:

Radio Constant 12V+ Wire: Orange
Radio Ignition Switched 12V+ Wire: (Class 2 Data)
Radio Ground Wire: Black/White
Radio Illumination Wire: N/A
Radio Antenna Trigger Wire: Dark Green
Radio Amplifier Trigger Wire: N/A
Front Speakers Size: N/A
Front Speakers Location: N/A
Left Front Speaker Wire (+): Tan
Left Front Speaker Wire (-): Gray
Right Front Speaker Wire (+): Light Green
Right Front Speaker Wire (-): Dark Green
Rear Speakers Size: N/A
Rear Speakers Location: N/A
Left Rear Speaker Wire (+): Brown
Left Rear Speaker Wire (-): Yellow
Right Rear Speaker Wire (+): Dark Blue
Right Rear Speaker Wire (-): Light Blue

Notes: If equipped, the amplifier is located on the driver side of the trunk.


now i matched up every wire on there to the harness on the new stereo, except that i cannot find the class 2 data cable, id like to get this up and going and i dont feel like paying somebody to do it lol.

any help it greatly appreciated, thanks guys

Oh i also was not able to match up the radio antenna trigger wire, but i read somewhere that possibly im supposed to connect that to the wire that says "remote" on the aftermarket harness?

im not sure if this is right so i havent done that yet

For the antenna trigger, you are right. Connect it to the new hu's remote wire. The class 2 Data cable I have no idea on.

Run that wire too a fuse that has power when the car is switched to on.

no, dont do that, the only way you can use the class2 data is by getting an adapter.

well the problem is i cant even find the class 2 data cable, the only wires that were there were the antenna cable, and the rest of the wires for the stock radio, and i matched them all up except for the red wire from my aftermarket stereo is for the accessory and i havent hooked that up yet because its supposed to go to the class 2 data cable i guess?

Class 2 data cable... doesn't matter.

You need to run a wire from the red HU harness wire to a switched 12v power source that's hot when the car is on.


From what I've seen, many car's don't use a simple "give it 12V and it's on" system... seems like the class 2 data cable gives them a "tickle" to wake up, and then the radio turns on and draws power from the constant hot... aftermarket radios need a wire that actually gives them the 12V they need.

Silly car designers have to make it hard. .

if you could just explain to me in detail how i am supposed to tap into a wire thats hot when the car is on and isnt when its off? i really have no idea how to do this, but id like to learn how. and i dont want to guess and screw something up.

also, i hooked up the accessory (the red from the aftermarket stereo) to the constant power aswell, and now the stereo turns on and will eject the cd and everything and it says its playing, yet i have no sound in the car, any ideas what that would be?

(yes i know i have to remove the faceplate each time i turn the car off or else it will drain my battery )

Check your passenger side fuse box for sunroof fuse.. Sometimes even if you dont have a sunroof the fuse is there. Run the wire to that spot. Remove that fuse split the wire evenly in the two holes and reinsert the fuse voila, power.

I think there is also some way to tap into the ignition wire.

why do people not like Alero stereo's..... mine sounds amazing... and have other Aleromodders who have been in my car to back that notion up

all people have different levels of amazing sound, i originally thought my factory system sounded good for factory, but my system now is more of a pleasure to listen to.

im still working on the brain rattling.

You should of sat in my Alero with $600 comps, $1,400 HU with proper amp and EQ to back it up. Makes the stock radio sound like a set of 99 cent headphones from Big Lots.

Stock MAY be acceptable for some but in no way compares to a real system.

I run with Alpine electronics and select speakers by location. Throw in a LOT of Dynamat to kill noises and calibrate using the IMPRINT system for a vehicle that sounds like a studio! Maybe not as loud as some posers would like but VERY clean and sweet sound.
