Fire In The Trunk!!!
 well last night driving home i had the music very loud for longer then normal and all of a sudden i had this funky smell!! and ive had the joy of smelling many blown subs but this didnt smell like that so i stop in a parking lot pop the trunk and to my suprize the box is smoking away!! OMG so i touch the sub and damn shes hot and i can see the dust cap deforming!! again OMG so i cut the sub apart!! and i find i have a perfect voice coil and a BURNT ass tincel!!! eff!!! check out my youtube for the video!! eff!! well i ordered a recone so theres a build log i can make for you guys lol and yet again eff!!!

This is what happens when you over drive your LFE (sub)... Try turning the juice down some, and you should hopefully avoid this problem next time.  Must have been a sight though!  |

gains at half and the deck is at half not the issue at all!! its just from a bad tincel in the spider

On that power you had to of been clipping man.  And if it was indeed a "bad tinsel" then tell Fi about it and they should cover a recone kit under warranty. Sorry to hear about you luck though!

with the BTL im shit outta luck there is no warrenty since it takes so much power lol and it burnt where the tincel meets the cone... i dont think it had anything to do with clipping since the coil was mint!! its still copper lol no smell nothing!!! i think its from too much glue on the spider and the tincel inside spider #2 and #3 and it made a weird pinch on it... ill take some pics when i find my camera

I'll be honest, I have seen firsthand experience of what clipped music can do to tinsel leads. The overall quality of tinsels can only stand so much in thermal handling before they begin to heat up too much. When I first got my subwoofer, I had it in a 4 ft^3 box tuned to 30Hz and facing the trunk. Due to the fact that it was facing the trunk, it took a little while for the smell to reach the cabin. By the time this smell had gotten to me, the damage had already been done. Doing this numerous times lead to the stitching holding the leads to the spider to snap. At first I thought this was manufacturer defect, but actually, the tinsels warmed up enough to burn the threads and actually leave minor burn marks on the spider itself. Similar to what you are seeing. Eventually, I reconed and learned my lesson. Since I have had my box aimed into the cabin I have only noticed smell once. This was when I was playing full-tilt for 10 minutes with a single battery, Hifonics amp, and 11.0 volts. (Clipped.)
Honestly, with your box firing into the trunk, I would say that it is safe to assume that this was a clipped signal played continuously, heating up the coils enough to actually begin burning the spider itself. People have ran 4,000rms all day to BTL's on those same tinsels. Difference being, they are clamping that power and keeping their voltage above 15.0 all day. Just be careful once you get the recone man. According to your recent threads, I'd start beefing up your electrical more. I follow your youtube channel too. You love to play full tilt, (who doesn't?) and your electrical is your weakest link. Just my $0.02.

yea i got a mechman alt on order and if needed i will add another battery
and for the smell it smelt like burning amp and by that time fire was already going lol oh well thats why i got this sub cheap recones
to top it off the last week or so i thought i had bad rca's it would cut out at low levels... so the tinsel had been shorting out for a while i think

well to add to the last post i got the voltage control module from mechman aswell with the 270 amp HO alt with 165amp idle!! gonna have some crazy power... also id like to go to the 14v batterys
and if you plan on getting a h/o alt for your car mechman is the place to go at the moment for our cars "3400" its $425 + 50 shipping to canada and the VCM is 50! so thats $75 savings only until dec 31!!
