Head Unit Confusion...

Okay, so I'm not very familiar with GM stuff... so I have a couple of questions:

1.) I know I can hook up subs to the stock head unit, but how would the quality be? I have Rockford Fosgate T1462C coaxials (I know, I know lol...) 4x6's in the front and the rears are unplugged. Also, how difficult would this be?

2.) When I do get around to changing out the head unit: apparently there's some kind of special adapter for the chimes or something...? If I don't care about the chimes, do I still need this? I don't really understand it, so I might be sounding like an idiot right now, so if somebody could explain it that would be awesome!

i just bought a headunit and got the chimes kit from scosche for like 50 dollars on overstock it was actually rather easy to install but i do not believe you ABSOLUTELY need it

When I installed and someone wanted to keep their factory head unit but add and ampifier we used one of these http://www.techforless.com/cgi-bin/t...20100504023701 They're pretty easy to hook up. Basically you tie into your rear speakers (either form the back of the HU or in the trunk directly from your rear speakers) and it takes a high level from your speakers and converts it to a line level for RCA inputs to go to the amplifier. As for the aftermarket chime...you can do it, just keep in mind that you will lose the chime so if you leave your lights, key in the ignition, stuff like that it won't "warn" you.

Will agree with you on that, but as stated in a few other posts...it's a cheap alternative and will get the job done for the moment until they have enough money to go the better route. I'm also a big fan of replacing the front speakers, and disconnecting the rear speakers.

If you can afford a head unit then buy one. Even a mediocre $150ish dollar unit is better than trying to use the stock unit.

If you cant do it, then at MINIMUM get a GOOD line out converter.

NE-7V is $20 and is a minimum. There are slightly better options there also for $35.

You dont have to use a charms harness. You will loose them though on 2001+ vehicles. 2000 and under are cool.

All I need is the wiring harness and a dash kit, both of which I can get at a Best Buy, correct? I don't care about my chimes... they don't work half of the time as it is lol.

Sure you can.

$20 for the fit kit.

$20 for a $3 antenna adapter.

$60+ for the wiring harness.

I would advise not going to best buy. Maybe for the fit kit... Its Metra. Unless you can find someone who deals with American International.

Dont get a crappy schosche kit. They look like crap, fit bad and they are thin plastic that warps.

Last I knew of Metra.

The standard wiring harness is $20, Standard fit kit $20 and the gm antenna adapter $20...

Entire ripoff. Metra is way over priced.
