engine noise and check engine light

can anyone tell me what could be my problem.

I started the car today and I could here a clicking noise coming from the engine compartment. The car didn't seem to drive any different. After work I started the car again and noticed the noise again, this time the check engine light was on. The noise seemed to get louder when I accelerated...kind of like a bad lifter noise or something. after about 10-15min of driving however the noise stoped. the light is still on.

Might be piston slap or an actual knock but you should notice some drive power issues there.

didn't notice any drive power problems, but didn't really try to race with that noise either.

I willing to bet that you have the 3400 motor, That ticking is normal when cold, Mine has been doing that for a few years now and it's still running 14's in the 1/4 mile

SES light most likely is a sensor.

Take it somewhere, sometimes they will waive the scan cost if you get it fixed

The check engine light is probably a lot more serious that a service engine soon light. My friend ignored his check engine light for two weeks and he had to buy a new motor.

I'd take it to a place that's NOT a dealership... dealerships are way overpriced...

I know my 3400 did that when it would get cold outside... I figured it was probably something minor so I replaced the spark plugs with NGK Iridiums and it made the noise less noticable. Hasn't done it for a few weeks now either. Then again my check engine light isn't on.

Read about a class action suit for 3400's for piston slap... Seems to be kinda broad on the 6+valve Gms. Didn't read about any fix for it though. Definatly get it checked though. If you're a college student walk over to the autoshop and say you just want to see if they can pull codes off your car. If not a college student hire one of the other Canucks here to drive out there lol. (So tired of seeing snow pictures I love you LaChicana!)

just started the car and it was making the noise again so I checked under the hood....there is antifreeze leaking from behind the valve cover...i've attached a pic... the noise is also coming from that area. any ideas on if that leak can cause all my problems? Incase its not clear, the picture is of the right front side of the enging (battery side)

not sure, but it could be a sensor throwing the SES light, and when my IAT sensor was blown, the engine was making hell of a lot weird noises, take it to an autozone or somewhere and get the computer codes read and then you can begin your adventure lol
EDIT: just realized you have no autozone, uhh anyway you can just buy the code reader if you got money for it, OBDII reader

did a little bit of research on this site and it looks like it might be a Lower Intake Manifold gasket problem...will look into it tonight.

I really liked that first pic. I to my knowledge don't hate the Limg problem yet... I don't own a 6r either. But Definatly post the pics. I think all the old pics got fubar'd and it is definatly nice to have an idea of what to look for.

I believe I read somewhere on this site that you can get oil in your coolant or worst coolant in your oil....I think that would be a big problem...just called the dealer and they want around $850 ($350 for parts) for the job...don't know if I should attempt this myself...what do you guys think...is it a big job.

I think Canadian tire will read the codes for you, for a price. But if you just say you want the codes and nothing else it shouldn't be too much.

Picked up a code reader for 45us shipped just for this reason, no Autozone, overpriced yet good mechs, Might even save the cost if I can get the right o2 sensor on the caddy fixxed in one shot.
