Does the same thing occur when changing sources? Like when you change between cd and radio. In all honesty, I would say that you either have a cheap HU or a defective one. If you don't hear any noise changing sources, then read your manual and see if there is any sensitivity setting for the Radio. The higher the sensitivity, the more feedack and noise that is induced into it. Normaly this is heard in while listening but it may cause some poping. If you hear the noise when switching between sources then it could be a couple of issues. Newer HUs that are all digital (such as the 24 bit doc's) switch the sources via software. A software bug can cause two sources to attempt to output a signal on the same line out. A more traditional HU switches via analog. As you push the button, it creates a path to a transitor that acts like a relay switching the source. Poor insulation of the componants or a faulty transitor can cause the poping. Poor insulation and fauty sofware can't be helped and will be seen on all of the products.
Try a demo unit at the store and see if it the same. Outside of the HU, I can only think of the sensitivity of the factory amp as being the cause. Our amp is pretty sophisticated. It contains a DSP that filters the signals from the HU and seperates it to biamping channels. The gain is determined by a signal from the OEM HU. Remember how it would change volume as you changed speed. Without the OEM HU it keeps the gain at max. That means that the higher the wattage of your new HU, the more noise that will be induced into your amp. It is normaly heard as a constant whine in the background (preamp hiss). Turn down your volume to nearly zero and change channels. Do you hear the pop. If no, then the gain is your problem.
