FMVSS 108 requires that you have an amber reflector visible to the side of the car in the front, so yes, clearing them is illegal. Probably would never be noticed though.

If you do not give the police reason to stop you, you should be alright. There are so many things on cars that police can pull you over for, anything hanging from the review mirror, not secured license plate, burnt out taillight, and the list goes on and on. Just be smart about it and you will be fine! A good place to go to ask questions about what is legal and what is not is 'forums.realpolice.net' - a bunch of cops are there and you can ask them questions and what not...good luck!

Don't know what part of KY you live in but I've never had any issues with cops and my lights and I live in Ky. As long as you don't act like a fool and bring any unnecessary attention to yourself, you'll be ok.

I've had my lights cleared for almost a year. I've been pulled over 4 times in that year. NONE of the cops mentioned my lack of reflectors. You'd have to find a really bored cop to get written up for that.

if you're that worried you could tint the reflector, it should look pretty good, and you'd still have a functional reflector.

I was thinking about doing them Impala-style on mine. Putting a reflector on the inside. I'd have to try it and see how it looked..
