Best Alero Manual?
Haynes? Chilton? Any others? I'm looking for the best DIY manual available. What do you guys use?

Factory manual, is the way to go. But any of the above will do for some stuff.

actual shop manuals put haynes to shame. but are like 5x more expensive.
for your basic work, haynes works just fine, then just use the board (and members who own shop manuals) for those really tricky jobs.  |

Is the 'shop manual' the same thing as a 'factory manual' ?  |

I don't know what it is but Cliff8928 has access to some nice ones. I have the complete engine teardown and build up manual from him in .pdf.

Factory service manual >>>>> Haynes > Chilton.
I would consider a Haynes or Chilton a waste of money, and much of the stuff in them is wrong too.

All the info in them is rather generic and can be applied to pretty much any car. It does help to have specific torque weights and stuff which they usually have.

god i hate haynes....chilton's tells you a wee bit more, and has better pictures...but i would go with the factory/shop manual

So the consensus is that factory service shop manual is the way to go... Now where do I get one? I did some google searches and couldn't find anything.

You must be referring to the Chiltons or Hayes.
I'm curious as to if anyone can say what's the difference in the 1999 year for the Early Service 3 volume set vs the 2 volume Factory Service manuals. |

I got the "service manual". it's the one that the mechanics at the dealership use. It's awesome  I got one for every GM car :O |

The best thing to do is get a factory manual. Get up with GM if you have too.
