Not tryin to jack your thread but, I don't want to start another topic. I am having a similar problem. Getting PO420 code,Crappy MPG, Also exhaust smells very rich. I have a high flow cat would that set a code? I have had it for a year though and the code just came up a month ago? I don't want to replace the O2 sensors if I don't HAVE to. My car has 127,000 miles if that's any help. I know GM recommends to change O2 sensors at 100,000 miles but, is it necessary

a guy i work with was throwing that code, and it was due to a bad gasket around the gascap. he got some putty/epoxy stuff, put that around it, and its gone.
My mom had it, and it was a small leak in the fuel neck itself... had to have that replaced. basically...start from the fuel cap and work your way up to the engine.
doh... wait... those might have been p0404

bringing this back from the dead to tell you that "sprurattic switching of the 02 sensors" is normal while cruising. if it wasn't switching back from 0-1000mv (usually you'll see something like 80, 940, 420, 880, 17, 780 - you get the point) then something is wrong with it. it is supposed to switch from lean to rich constantly, around the switchpoint (ive seen anything from 450 to 550 depending on the vehicle and its calculated load)
