My 3400 Teardown/Rebuild Log

alright, so as most of you know i acquired a spare engine awhile back. it's a 3400 out of a 2003 grand am gt. it's the second motor out of this guy's car, so it's actually branded a 2000 motor, and it has 90,000 miles on it before the guy blew the head gasket and sold it to me for $75 . but anyways, over the past few months i've been tinkering with it, going one bolt at a time, but today i finally got into the good stuff and decided to make a log for myself so follow along as i turn this engine into a BEAST

finally got the damn harmonic balancer off

ewww milky oil pan

yay no oil pan!

bottom side before removing the pistons, rods, and the oil sending unit haha

woohoo no more pistons!!

and that's as far as i've gotten today!

Awesome. I want to build my spare 3400 too! But alas, with rings, Disney, and a wedding to pay for, I'm not going to get to any time soon, so no fun for me You should get an engine stand. It would make things easier! Keep takin pics and documenting it. Good start!

Ditch the 305, do the 3400 build, then go back to the v8...replace it with something decent. Hrm...400 maybe? I have a couple garages. The one where I live...well, unfortunately I don't think the fiance wants me doing an engine rebuild in it. The one where I keep my stuff, that's where my spare engine is...but the garage is full of other stuff too, like OSV kits and cars and stuff...so no room! But there's a pit, which I loooove having access to.

Impressive.

I can just imagine a fast forward to the day when adria is 40-50 years old and rich, and doesn't want to work on her cars anymore. Then everytime she goes to the corner garage to get basic work done and they try to rip her off, there will be epic ownage!

Sweet tear down.

Those middle 2 pistons don't look too good.

I just got one of those engine stands at Harbor Freight.

Paied $53 (on sale) for a 1000 lbs stand which now sports an Olds 330

yeah, pistons are trash... i beat them out of the cylinders with a metal rod! i knew i'd be replacing them with forged pistons, so i didn't really care about them haha.
