Heres what I've got Viper 2 Way responder 591XV

I like it. I added a backup siren to mine though since several friends around here with alarms had their stuff taken anyway since the thiefs cut their battery cables. The backup goes off when the alarm goes off or when it loses power.

I got the Viper 791XV. Pretty much the same as the 591 except it adds more Aux channels and some other minor stuff. I too have a battery backup siren, with two mini pain sirens on the inside as well(highly recommended). My brother had one pain siren inside his truck and I didn't feel like sitting in it any longer than 5 seconds while it was going off. Very uncomfortable.

those are both good.

DEI also makes clifford which is the same as the viper.

Or you can look into Compustar.

There are quite a few choices out there, do your research, search the net for reviews, talk to the your installer.

If you have a system worth a bit of cash I highly reconmmend getting a 2way alarm with all the goodies.

Boy I foget what kind I have, since I got mine 5 years ago when the car was new. It is Prestige which I think it part of Audiovox. It was top of the line in it's day and it had remote start, (but that don't work anymore)

I also installed LoJac last year, but your car has to be stolen for that to work

I would not reccomend installing it yourself. Remote start maybe, but when it comes to alarms, I would leave it to the professionals. They KNOW where to run everything so it can't be accessed easily. Most places will do free install if you buy an alarm from them. I know the guys I bought mine from did. I have a python. I can't remember which one.

PS: Don't do it yourself way to many wires and a major PITA.

Doing it yourself depends on what alarm you get. The basic siren with a shock sensor is very easy. But once you start adding remote start, keyless entry, 4 trigger zones, 5 channels, pagers, starter kill, etc....it's pretty tough. I had my 791 installed for $220 at Best Buy. But they did a horrible job (didn't hook up the trunk release, hooked up the parking lights flash to the instrument cluster and not the actual parking lights, set the remote start crank time way too short, scratched the trim of my brand new navigation system, and broke the fuse holder for my amp).

i reccommend a light sleeping attitude (wife or girlfriend that can wake you up will work fine too) and a large metal bat, if he or she runs you can opt for running shoes to accompany the bat or you can just get a shotgun, your personal choice....

My mistake, Turbo is right. You may not catch them 100% of the time, but when you do it's like Christmas.

don't do it unless you know what your doing, too many things can go wrong and it could end up costing more than if you were to actually pay someone to do it.

I've been doing installation professionally for the last 6 years and have seen so many people come in whtne they or their buddy tried installing an alarm!

But if you wanna try go for it, just pm me if you have any questions or need help

Im wanting to get an alarm for my car. I dont have alot in it thats valuable (DVD player & Screen but thats it and i got them cheap) but i do want some sort of deterant. So obviously i dont wanna spend alot of money...maybe around 100 bucks. There is ALOT on ebay for around this price that seems to have all of the functions that you gus said were good above but i have no idea what to think of all this ebay stuff.

So my question is will an alarm for around this price be worth it and if so which one???

For an alarm system that cheap I would recommend this or, if you'd like to go hi-tech cheap go with this.

i mean if you're just looking for something cheapo, they sell some at pep boys and such that are like $30. they basically just bolt a horn under your hood and it has sensors built right into it so if the car moves or whatever it will go off. Depends o how cheap you want to go.

How much does installation on an alarm usually run?

Ditto...Circuit city did mine and the only problem was the hood was a little scraped on the inside

Rubered00, if done right - the install will cost more than the alarm itself.
Installation is way more important than the alarm itself - if you want to get some really good advice, talk to Murph over on sounddomain.com... the man is legendary about alarms/security. But anywhere from $200-$400, depending on what elements you have going in, while the alarm itself is probably in the $200 range (but, start adding in multiple pain generators, shock sensors, etc. and that'll go up as well). I have the Viper 791x on my car, with 4 pain generators, battery backups, shock/tilt/glass sensors, cable locks on the trunk, stealth wiring/loom on everything, etc. - I thin k my whole security system ran just under $1k - comprehensive. It makes sense though the more and more stuff you put in - rather stupid to have a $300 alarm/install guarding $10k worth of equipment, etc. Just remember though too - if a thief wants it, he's going to get it, nothing really you can do that'll stop someone determined enough.
Cheers,
Collin
