Yes a CAI will do it. The more you do to the car, the less gas it will comsume.

My engine is the 3400 and I have,

WAI, P&P upper and lower Manifold, 62mm TB, underdrive pullies, taylor wires with bosch platuim 4 plugs.

The sticker says 32 mpg highway, I did about 35 mpg. One time it was 37 mpg. One the other hand, with my mods I have to use 93 oct. because anything lees burns too quick

Buy premium, don't drive so fast. Make sure your tires are properly inflated, air filter is clean, plugs and wires are good, and clean out the heavy junk.

Yea, and if you are worried about gas mileage, why the hell did you just buy a turbo?!?!

And don't put premium in. The car is designed to run on regular. It has been proven that upgrading a car designed to run on regular to premium will not help, and can even hurt, performance and mileage of the car.

Hell, My Alero only gets 19/20 in the city, and not to much more than that on the highway.

In winter I get about 19-20 with mainly city driving. With my current mods I still get about 27 on the highway. I think with a solid computer tune I could get better mileage but thats gonna be a while.

GM calibrates engine and transmission on premium, I believe. Engine for sure. EPA gas mileage thingy is done with premium too.

Mine's an automatic with just over 20,3xx miles on it. Around town/work commuting I get about 21. 24 mpg during normal highway driving. Though for some odd reason I got 31 mpg when I drove 3 hours non-stop up to NY state and then again back home again late last month. I always use regular gas.

It wouldn't make sense for GM to calibrate the engine on premium, then recommend regular. The differences are immense.

Seems kinda stupid, doesn't it? You getter better mileage though, that's why they run the EPA schedules on it. Also makes more power and burns cleaner. My engine runs like a champ on premium or even midgrade though. I make up the extra money for gas in mileage, when I can make myself pay it at the pump. They tell you regular is fine, because it is fine, but not great.

Yah I know this is kind of relating to whats being discussed here but I just bought my '99 3400 Alero yesterday. I was wondering what is the best gas to put in for mileage and for performance. Still new and just wanting to learn as much as I can from the start. Thanks guys!

Any "mileage" increase you see in using premium fuel (not much since it's a fairly low compression engine so it's not needed) you definately lose in paying extra for the premium fuel

Engines are Calibrated to run on all fuels, but they post the highest fuel economy numbers, HP numbers and Torque when run on premium, that is why those scheduals are run with Premium. The trans cals are run on the lowest avaliable pump gas, because this produces lower torque numbers, hence worse case conditions for upshift and downshifts points.

So if you are looking for bettern gas mileage, clean filter, tires properly inflated, take your foot out of it a bit, and primium will help in some cases.

^So then why don't they recommend running the car on Premium instead of Regular?

^^^ Simple marketing, if you tell someone to run there car on premium, especially the demographic of those buying cars such as alero's they will be turned off just in the fact of the difference in gas prices. So if the engine can run on regular, tell them that. Believe it or not is helps sell cars.
