So we just got hit by that big snow storm u guys had in the states and we got about 7 inches of snow on the ground with ice underneath it..
anyways back to my story
So i'm going to turn up this street which is basically straight up a hill and i see this impala backing up because it couldent make it.
So i let him out and then i started climbing it and i was able to get up it no problem. lol well not really no problem but i made it without a run even.
So Unless he has REALLY poopy tires, I'm sure he has traction control and well just like i always figured, TRACTION CONTROL SUCKS!
and thats my 2 cents.
but like comon if a 5 spd ecotec alero with like a full tank of gas and 200lbs of stereo in the back with other junk can climb a hill that a full size car with traction control can't climb, in my opinion from owning a full size car, thats REALLY pathetic.
ANWAYS, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE IN CANADA BEING HIT WITH THIS BIG SNOW STORM

Here in bc we have no snow, and thats the way my aler-ho likes it.
Getting up a hill like that isnt all about traction control, with your extra weight that can be an asset, allso Driver is a lot of the error you'll see in the winter. Most ppl that are Driving a impalla *cough* OLD PEOPLE *cough* they tend to not drive so well in the snow... at least thats my experance.

7 inches is a big snowstorm in MOOSE JAW? Come on. We got 30 inches on the 23rd.
It comes down to driver, driving style, and tires.

The base impala's Don't have traction control. I have them at work, and even with the 3400 V6 I can spin those tires all day long.

Good to know, Philly just bought a fleet of Impalas for police cars, but they still use the crown vic's on the highway

i wonder if they use a different transmission with a more aggressive gear ratio, cause i cant spin mine and alero wieghs less, but then again, that probably helps me "hook up" now that i think of it.
anyways, ive had 2 cars with traction control. i havn't had a chance to try this traction control, since we haven't really had any snow in MN. but my aurora had "traction control" where my alero has "ETS" enhanced traction system? i think its a more generic, less effective version, seems to take longer to kick in and isn't as sensitive to slight wheel spin. but even the aurora, the nicest thing about it was it told you your wheels were spinning, somtimes in the snow you dont know...it did help some, i could be in 4 inches of snow, and just floor it, and it would just go through it (when i was just messing around) were other cars the tire spin would get out of hand
i really wish they had a deep snow mode, my brothers lexus gs300, not only has traction control, but when you put it in snow mode (or somthing like that) it doesn't use 1st gear, starts in 2nd, that would be nice for situations like that
sticks are better in the snow if you know how to drive them

Well 7inches isn't a massive snow storm but it hasn't stopped snowing really since i posted that, and that was a few days ago now. I'm not sure how much we got not, but it was enough that I got stuck in my back alley getting out of wear I park. Something about pushing the snow with the front bumper makes it hard to get moving....
ohwell, YAY FOR SNOW!!

The police package impalla's are supercharged 3800's with agressive gearing in the transmission. It is a police only package.
So for around town and in the city it will be great for the po po if they want to catch up to you.

Yes the impallas do use a different transmission, the 4T65E. I am not sure of the ratios and what not, but even just a higher stall torque ratio, not speed, torque converter could contribute to ease of spinning the tires.

I dont know, I like having traction control in the snow. It helps to keep the car going where I wanna go. Such as if the tires start spinning while going around a corner.
As to the feature with deep snow thats also a nice thing to have. My parents Cadillac CTS has a winter mode option and it will start off in 3rd gear. That sure does help, along with alos having the traction control on.

We also got quite the dump of snow here. Was about 10 inches here. Plus it was blowing at about 50 or so km/h. It was hard to get out of our yard yesterday due to the crazy drifts. And we are also supposed to get another crap load of snow tonite and tomorrow. May get a little crazy. Thank goodness i got my winter grips on now.

im pretty sure the police impalla's use the regular old 3800, with 3.29 ratio. they were out way before gm released the "impalla ss".
the supercharged ones have a 2.93 ratio.

Wow just the 3800 thats sad, almost tempting not to pull over and just outrun them
cept my car still isn't faster then the 3800.
And i guess the 3800 is still faster then most cars on the road anyways I guess. Anything going over 180k/hr the cops are not suppose to chase because that is considered endagering your life, they are just suppose to basically follow u from a distance and wait until u run outta gas or something stupid, atleast thats what i was told anyways.

Haha, you should test the theory. Maybe it cause the police are to lazy to remove GM's Speed Govenor and can't go faster then 180KM/H
But seriously, I have seen Ontario OPP in Impala's go way faster. I was going 130KM/H and this cop passed me so fast I didn't even see him coming, I have no clue what he was going, but I am guessing in the +200KM/H range

I work with Emergency Medical Services, and we have the police package Impala's for our PTL's (paramedic team leaders) and no, they are not supercharged.
I also share a garage with the OPP, and their Impala's are identical.
They are 3800 with a beefed up suspension and brakes, top speed fuel cutoff of 124 MPH, oil/tranny & ps coolers, Heavy-Duty 4T65E 4-Speed Automatic, Electronically Controlled (Traction Control is Not Available on Police Package) 3.29 ratio.
And yes, they do move!
