Boost Controller
Hey all, quick question...
if I plan on running 8lbs of boost and am using an 8 PSI spring in the wastegate, do I need to have a boost controller?
My assumption is NO, but I want to be certain.
I don't want to complicate matters more until I'm in the higher boost levels if I don't have to.

depending on how much boost your waste gate allows you to have you wont need one... But I may be wrong so don't quote me on that.

if you get a good electronic boost controler like the apexi avc-r you can set your boost depending of rpm, gear, speed, etc.... plus it will eliminate boost creep if programmed the right way

o0o0 so if I was spinning through first at 8lbs I could lower 1st gear boost, to ensure I would be putting the most power to the ground?

To answer your original question, your assumption is correct. If you want to run 8psi, an 8psi spring in the wastegate is all you need and no boost controller.
The spring in the wastegate is the minimum boost that you can run, and you can always raise it from there with a boost controller, but you can never lower it without changing to a lower pressure spring.
So if you find that you're spinning through first gear at 8psi, you will not be able to lower the boost below the 8psi spring. You would need to run a lower pressure spring to start off with, and then raise the boost from there.
I think you'll be ok at 8psi. The tires may spin a little, but they'll grab pretty quick with some good, sticky tires. If you set it all up and it does spin more than you like, it's very easy to just go change the wastegate spring later on and add a boost controller to the setup.
Is your car auto or manual tranny?

Automatic, and a 6 PSI spring is another option I'm thinking of, should 8 be too much in 1st...

For some reason I thought you had a stick...
With the tall final drive on the auto you'll be just fine with 8psi as a minimum. If you braketorque to launch, you'll get a quick little half second wheel spin and then the tires will grab. You can always braketorque launch and ease into the throttle instead of pegging it and it'll grab and go right away.
On my car with all season tires on the stock rims, I can't barely get the tires to spin on launch if I try, but my turbo is only a little guy. On a 30R you'll get more power at the same 8psi, so it might spin just for that half second before it grabs, even on some good tires.
You'll be just fine.
