Hi everyone,

I hope someone can help with this one.

I have a 99 alero w/ 2.4L

When i start to drive just before it is going to shift there is a rattling sound that comes from the car and this happens at every shift from the car. I can also hear it when driving exact at 70mp . The sound is like a a playing card in a bike tire. happens for just the shift and then it gone.

I thought transmission?! but!

I sat in the car and started it left in park and hit the gas and the sound is there. again.

any ideas??

Put your car in Drive and step on the brake and hit the gas and see if you can here the rattle or the trans slipping.

o.k. did it, no rattleing and the trans did not slip. I hit the gas and few times and even held it at about 3300 rpm and was fine. Put the car back in park and hit it again and the sound is there. weird

Loose exhaust... hmmm.. o.k. well it was snowing a little while ago, so I cannot crawl under there now.

If anyone else has any ideas to check for?

Besides driving the car of a cliff and recording it and posting it here for your amusement.

^ Don't worry nobody likes to see an ALero bite the dust.

Can you pin point where the rattleing is comming from. under the hood, or somewhere under the car, or even something in the car.

If you get it to a certain area, that helps a lot

Yeah it's most likely a heat shield on the cat. No big deal, if it's lose just pull it off, you really don't need it

Good news is I found the problem!!! shop just called

Bad news!! There is a rod in the motor nocking and they said it would be cheaper to buy a new motor then repair it. $4,270.00 motor and installed.

So now what ?? any new ideas on getting it repaired?

Wow that is expensive. You should check around for a cheaper quote. I would not spend that much on the Alero. Its not even worth that much.

that totally sucks dude. i don't really know what to tell ya. maybe look to trade it in? personally, i wouldn't pay that much to repair my car, even though i really love my alero.

my rod bearing spun too, it was bad, couldnt rev over 3 000 rpms. just buys some eagle rods, wiseco pistons, and get a place to put her back together. then turbo the hell out of it.!!! thats what i did neway, except the turbo part. well soon hopefully. cost me 4 grand even including all the parts everything new oil pump, gaskets, etc. and the rebuild.

i wouldnt invest money in a new or used one tho, especially when u can use the same amount of $$ and get it with way better parts. i love the 2.4 but they are kinda a crappy motor, ive known and heard of too many ppl with that motor having rod problems including myself.

but if u do replace the motor, watch for those sharp left hand turns.
