Winter Tires

Ok Canucks -

need to know from those who live in the snow --- (especially those in southern ontario) :

what winter tires ya got? like em/dislike em, how many seasons ya got out of em, $$$, anything! :rolleyes:

im in toronto so lotta city driving.. with frequent trips to SNOWBOARD COUNTRY (blue mountain - those stupid single lane 60km/h roads (stupid hwy26 - they need to build a highway RIGHT to BM) --- mt st louie & horseshoe - all hwy400 so not nearly as bad as BM when snowing --- etc.)

last winter, my stock bfgoodrichs 15s (~80,000km) were slipping a lot in the snow.. even in a little snow it was very easy to slip -- so time for something new.

i'll let ya know what i was runnin last year...i think they were michelin tho...don't hold me to it...i had bought all for, with one season on 'em(yes used) for 50$...i couldn't complain...they'll be goin back on soon

I'm not in Canada, but I was in the UP of Michigan for a few winters. 300" of snow. I have Cooper Weathermasters, and I got around better than all the 4x4s. Two winters on them now, and they're starting to look used, but not very worn. $50US/each.

Had Cooper weather masters (215/60/15) last winter.

Have Nokian Hakabalita's (195/65/15) this year. Skinnier will be a little better in the snow. I live in Barrie BTW.

I actually am getting my winters tires mounted on my stock steelies (15") tonight!

After doing research, i decided to go with 4 x Kumho KW-19s. they are the replacement to the kumho kw-11 tire - which had decent reviews. I'm getting the entire set of 4 tires mounted, balanced and installed for under $400 CDN through a hookup at a local tire store. (i'll put them on my car in late nov/dec though)

So hopefully they do a decent job -- i think at this point -- any winter tire will be better than my stock bf goodrichs.. while i'll keep around for good measure

i'm only keepin the stock tires for the drags next year...won't be so scare to burnout with them...and the smaller/lighter wheel will definately help

I got 195/65/15's too for the Kumho kw-19 i ordered -- some people on this board were telling me to stay away from 195/65 -- too narrow and that it's better to get wider tires.. but after my own research i determined 195/65 are fine!

Nokians are NICE MAN!!! the best winter tire out there!! those must have cost you a pretty penny!

Ah yes.. the pleasent drive through barrie on the way to collingwood -- or heck -- horseshoe and mt st louis are in barrie rite?

i try to stick as close to 120km/h on the 400... been ok so far.

yep!

Yeah, the nokians are nice. I actually got them from a junkyard here, for 150 for all 4. They look barely used. the 195s are fine, so far. The skinnier the better for snow anyways. wider tires tend to snowshoe.

i picked up my kumho kw-19s over the weekend and holy moly they look like tank tires or something.. some crazy tread pattern!

looking forward to trying em out in the winter!

well i just changed my rims back to the stockers, and all i can say is thank god....it's been snowin for 2 days and slush is all over....i guess winter's already comin

new liskeard you mean? it's almost 2 hours north of North Bay, or about 4and a half hours north of Barrie

I've got my stockers - and have been using them during the winter now for i think 3 winters (which would include this winter).... dont' particularly like the tires, but since I dont' wanna waste em, I'm just gonna run em to the ground - since i'm not overly agressive in the winter and I don't mind slippin here and there, i'm not gonna put the $$ into the winter tires right now...

I'm thinkin I might still put another set of all seasons even after these ones are gone, but not the Eagle RSAs.... I'm just being careful that there might be a time where I won't be able to put the summer tires on and will have to keep the stocks on longer or for the whole summer.

FYI (I have done quite a deal of research on this) A NARROWER SNOWTIRE WILL PREFORM MUCH BETTER THAN A WIDER ONE. A WIDER SNOW TIRE WILL SPREAD THE WEIGHT OF THE CAR MORE AND ALLOW FOR LESS TRACTION. A NARROWER TIRE WILL PUT THE WEIGHT ON A SMALLER "FOOTSTEP" AND MORE LIKELY GET A BETTER GRIP INTO THE SNOW/SLUSH...
