Hey all, I'm new here, and need a little help on mufflers. I want to to get a new muffler that has the sound of a true muscle car. However I realize this is impossible without altering the engine. So is there a muffler that I can get to mimick that sound? I've been looking between the cherry bomb and the DynoMax series.

i like flowmaster, i have a 40 series on my 3400 but i have heard the 80 series and it sounds nice too. what size engine do you have?

I was looking at univerisal magnaflow mufflers, with dual outlet.

Is the flowmaster really that good though? I was also looking at those, but wasn't sure which series would be most fitting, I want something throaty and nice sounding, but not overly deafing like my old Probe's fart can. :P

By the way, I got a '99 GX, 2.4L twin cam.


(P.S. - Haha funny sig jackal, my highschool mascot is a wolverine AND those football players have the same colored uniforms as my HS football team. Odd. :-p

Alot of people have 40's and 80's they both sound nice in my optinion but i wouldnt know on the 4banger. Maybe a cannon with a deep tone would be better... i have a 40 serious and it makes me feel like a BAMF when i start it up sound like a V8 camaro, but both 80s and 40s loose their tone when u get above 4,000 RPM if anyone would agree, it then grumbles and kicks when it drops, but i never rev it like that, the 1-2000 RPM sounds nice enough reving. Flowmaster will top Magnaflow anyday on sound quality but not sure about reving

yea my 40 series is loudest at 2k rpm's higher than that it quiets down and it has an awesome tone at idle.

I drive a 3400 V6, recently got the bright idea to rid my car of its muffler for reasons of curiousity. Thought it sounded cool at first but then became an annoyance to me, passengers and neighbors alike. I shopped around and did some research, decided to buy a 4 x 9 inch cross Magnaflow Aluminized muffler, 2 inch in/outlet of course, matching the Alero's stock exhaust pipe dimensions. It is through this that I will still have achieved straight through performance but hoping it will quiet down a bit!! I am not new here, my old name became inactive and I had to reregister so I am hoping to get back into it here.. forgive me.

It looks like this, but without the offset. Unlike Flowmaster, Magnaflow actually provides a less restrictive design, while still maintaining a smooth but powerful sound.

help me understand this statement, flowmaster has been around for a long time, and is proven, all companies claim to be the least restrictive. and my 80 series sounds mean especially running with headers and a highflow cat.

Incorrect. Alero's got the "leftover" when it came to the exhaust IMHO. The only N body with 2.25" exhaust piping stock is a GAGT. SE's and Alero's got the 2" exhaust, which if I remember correctly from gutting mine, measures roughly 1 7/8" I.D.

To put my 2 cents in, I've been told that same fact J, and that's what prompted me to purchase the Magnaflow I've got now. I've heard a few clips of 40's and 80's on GM 6s, but never in real life. I know they sound sweet on a Camaro or Mustang, but without actually hearing it, I was @ square one decision-wise. Then when I started hearing multiple people talking about how Magnaflows out-flow Flowmasters due to their design, (Plus seeing cutaways of both single-in dual-out mufflers )I figured that Magnaflow was the way to go. You see, a flowmaster's inlet is on the same side as an outlet, like in the picture. A Magnaflow's inlet is all alone on one side, and it's outlets are on the opposite end, thereby making the company's "straight-through design" claim. This supposedly makes for better flow, but is much harder to make fit due to the one outlet being needed to be routed BACK acrossed the car for a symmetrycal outlet in the bumper

The magnaflow does look more restrictive but all it really is is a cannon surounded by foam.... yeah its got a low tone but can rev high and sounds like ass when it does

As you can see by the posted image Str33tRacer has provided us here, you can see clearly the bottom cut away of a Flowmaster muffler, there are many barriers for the exhaust to flow against and around, this causes more restriction. However, the Magnaflow for instance does not have anything in the way, it's essentially a pipe, but with sound deadening material. That's all I cared about, trying not to take into account what sounded "mean" or what might be accepted as more popular. Just trying to find the most practical solution to the issue, but with a quality product.

who wants to bet that if u dyno'ed an alero with a magnaflow and then with a flowmaster....... there would be virtually no HP or Torque difference. and if u guys seriously believe there is any noticable difference well ur dumb imo.

Its all about what YOU want.... like i said my buddys dad has been in the muffler business since he can remember and he ones 3 shops in St Paul right now.... his opinion has always been he likes the sound of flowmaster better

I just got my magnaflow yesterday in the mail, it's 5x8", 20" length overall and 14" long case. Inlet is 2.25" and outlets are dual 2"s. Can't wait til I get it on tonight. It's pretty much a fart can with sound deadening material around it and weighs 12lbs. Flowmasters's insides (if you look at their site) is what allows them to produce their trademark sound. Magnaflow just goes for maxinmum flow.

But I got a kick ass magnaflow decalto throw on my car later!

I only bought Magnaflow over Flowmaster because after looking at the underside of my car I felt that that the Magnaflow would fit the best with the least modification, 'cause i'm a lazy bastard like that.

that's probably true. the guy who installed my flowmaster had to cut quite a bit off of the inlet and outlet pipes. it didnt just weld right up so to speak.
