Cold engine knocking?

I've started to notify something since the cold weather just arrive. When I start my car after it has sit for all night for exemple, The car at start rev at about 1600 rpm which is normal for a cold engine. The problem is that I hear a knocking sound from the engine for a short duration until the car gets back to idleing at around 1100 rpm.

Is this a common sound at a cold start?

I can feel a vibration when the "knocking" happens. after lets say 45 seconds it disapears.

Mine ticks and in the cold it is even worse but nothing to worry about. It seems GM engines do this a lot.

the 3400 is known for its "piston slap". i have a loud tick or knock for the first min until the pistons warm up enough to fill in the slight gap. the GM guys tell me that the pistons are a bit too small for the cylinder. there is a fix, but its only temporay. After that it goes away and sounds fine.

Its just one more thing you will have to live with. Ive had the piston slap since I go the car at the 40,000KM mark. Its a 2000. now has 82,000KM.

theres 2 different ticks really, theres the piston slap and lifter ticks. piston slap = normal. lifter tick = bad. lifters are damn loud

Nah, its not lifters. And maybe knocking isn't the right word to use. It's like something is loose inside the engine. I have 107 000km (around 68 000 miles)

No lights comes on.

to make it short:

-Start engine in the cold
-1600 rpm rev
-each time i hear the noise the engine's revolution varry slightly btw 1500 and 1600
-45 seconds later, revolutions are under 1500 and noise is gone and it's running fine.

I'm guessing its only the engine that is too cold. I was just wondering if ppl with the 2.4L were getting something similar.

Also, does anyone have a sound clip of his 2.4? I would like to know how it sounds to see if it compares to mine. thank you

same w\our f-150. it knocks unitll it warms up a bit a the pistons swell some. its common. vibration could also be if u were plowing snow. that happens to me a lot after going thourgh a couple small drifts (halfway up door). snow get stuck b\t engine and fan and knoks the fan out of wack.
