I can take my keys out of my car while its running and keep driving... I can also turn my car off with another key. I can get it in to the first stage with another key aswell. where the battery comes on....
Is this a normal thing with alero's? or is something wierd here.
thanks.

Occasionally, a few times a year, I will get in, and my security light will start flashing at me. Then the car wont start for about 15 minutes or so. (something screwy with the passlock?) then it goes away and I can go free.

my old 99 alero let me take the keys out. my new 04 alero doesn't. it was nice for starting it in the winter. could start it, take out the key and lock it and leave it without worrying.

This is not a normal thing for any car. Most of the time it means the teeth on your Key are worn down. If you have a new key cut from the VIN number and not a copy made from your old key, that should solve the problem (if it is a prblem for you) A worn key may also be causing the problems with your passlock system.

Had that problem, a very nice and cheap "remote start", but I found that my timbers in my ignition were bad, if this were to keep going, over time my timbers would have gotten stuck and I wouldn't be able to start or move my car. Lucky for me my car still had a warranty.
I wish you luck on this one!

HUGE problem for GM vehicles, has been for years. I just discovered that my 99 will let me take the key out, only in the ACC position.
I have had the a Security light issue before as well.
The first time I was driving in Monsoon and the light came on, now it comes on quite often. I have a Viper XXXXX(don't remember) 2 way paging with bypass module. A couple of time the car has not started by remote as the passlock was tripped.
Other times the car will start by remote, when I put the key in then the security light will come on. Or like I said just driving around the light comes on.
Very strange, should get it looked at but I will more than likely just get S*** on for after-market remote start.
so whatever.

I was looking in to one of those. I thought VIPER was a good name brand for alarms/ remote starts. maybe depends on the models?
I was wondering how that would work out. like if I could start it with remote and just drive away cause my car is wierd. lol. guess not though.

No, can't just drive away cause the steering wheel will still be locked and any starter requires a brake kill switch. if you hit the brake the engine stops.

Mines been doing it too, didn't notice till about 4 months ago. I have no problem with it, I think its great. Start the car on cold days and lock it, get in your car get ready to go and you've forgot something in the house? No worries, leave the car running pull the keys out so you can unlock your house door...lol
