will this work?

Just wondering if a PS pump from a 99 V6 Grand Am will work on the ho.... I'm guessing it will, since it's the same engine, but figured I'd ask first. Thanks yo.

Yes, as long as its the same engine. If you have the 2.2DOHC or 2.4L, just make sure its for a 2.2 or 2.4 GA

awesome thanks guys. this woman in indy is parting out her GA for real cheap and told me to make an offer. I have to go pull the part myself... she told me to find a price for a used one and just offer her something below that. what should i offer? i have no idea how much a used one of those costs.

Some year N body's came with a variable effort PS pump the only way to tell is a large proportioning valve on the pump. Post a pic of yours and I will be able to tell you if you have it or not. Then have her email you a pic. You can use a non variable pump on a car that has it but your steering will be harder at low speeds. However I am not sure if you can use a variable pump on a car that did not initially have it. Once cliff sees this he will have more info for you. Honestly I would still buy the other one and then figure it out later. I would start at like $30 and go no higher than $55. New ones are around $130 I think.

hmm maybe that's what someone did on mine then... that's when my PS doesn't work is at low speeds, like when i'm turning, pulling into or out of a parking spot... hmmmmm. it's really obnoxious.

And you're sure the fluid is full and everything?

yep... it was worse like 9 months ago, started cutting out around curves going 60, but since then it gives me minimal problems only at VERY low speeds, as I said.. and when idling.... it's been about a month since i've checked the fluid, but ever since i've had the problem I haven't lost any fluid. I can check it again today, even though my hood probably has about 12 inches of snow on it... grrrr

Check if the fluid is nice and clean or brown and smells burnt. The pumps on these cars do fail. Mine did the same thing, the shaft starts to get loose and then breaks. Sometimes this is caused by old gunked up fluid.

I use trans fluid instead of power steering fluid. I'm not even sure why GM still uses power steering fluid but its not necessary.

Aren't you getting an ice storm down there? Its snowing up here.

Is your ABS light on? My 96 GTP has the variable steering crap and if you disconnect it, the abs light comes on.
