D.I.C. swap

so here's a thought that i've had want to try. but need your guys thoughts first

i want to take a drivers information center from a grand prix or any car (like the ones in the gaugle cluster of some cars (like the overhead console one from monte carlos and impallas) and install it in my car. i mostly want to miles per gallon and a few of the other features it has.

from what it looks like its not hard... just need to splice a few wires. but my question is.... are data wires the same in all gm cars... like the data bus line from the bcm and stuff. or will this dic not beable to decode my car

Theres not going to be any programming in the alero's pcm for mpg. Your looking at alot of work. You would somehow have to run a pcm with the programming but then what would you run it off of? Cant swap with the stocker cause of bcm and motor specs. GOOD LUCK

While the Class 2 signal is theoretically the same (J1850 VPW), The actual data transmitted may or not be there for the DIC to function properly. It's kinda hit or miss.

The MPG isn't directly calculated by the PCM in most cases. The actual DIC will do the calculations based on information collected from a few standard PIDs.

thats what i was thinking cliff... but i'm not totally sure. and i saw the one you can build... but i think this one would look much more integrated.

what i would love to do... but it's probably not possible is take one from the trucks (where the odometer is) and swap in my gauge cluster. but i like the idea of the roof one... i dont use my little compartment anyways

There's also the 2002 truck one which was actually around 2"x4" and mounted in the center console. The one in the cluster is a 2003+ thing.

Some of the S/T trucks also had them in their overhead consoles and it's actually a removable module.

Also, one thing to note. It may be important to get one from a vehicle which has the same amount of cylinders. I don't know exactly how critical it is on the calculations, but it may make a difference.

That's how I do it in HPTuners, nothing special required.

there is a decent chance it will, but also a chance that some of the features might not depending on how the alero transmit that data compared to the car you got the dic from. that one you have a picture of looks like a Chrysler from the looks of the 2 button operation (don't quote me on that) , but if it is that def won't work.
