First time oil change

I bought an oil filter from walmart for my 02 alero. when I took it out of the box it looks totaly different then a regular filter that has the rubbery covering over the top. The one i have looks like it could be a very small air filter because it looks like a air intake. Did i buy the right one or did i just get the inside of a regular oil filter?

You mean there is no casing? Like you can actually see the filter element?

Let's start with:

- what engine do you have
- what part number did you buy?

he must have the 2.2 t0o, i buy fram filters for mine, taht sounds like it, it isnt a screw on, it clips to the thing on the motor or smehign on the inside then screws in, its the reason why i dont change the oil in this car, i did the ford and do the mud truck, but these ones for the 2.2 seem above my head plus i saw on here you need a special socket to do it

Yep sounds like you have the ecotec....you will need the tool. Unless you have a socket that big and a long extension you can do it that way too.

Its mounted near the intake manifold on top to the right....so dont try looking for it under the car.

Careful when you tighten it cause its plastic and it can strip.

Changing the oil on a 2.2 is easy. I don't see how it could be confusing to clip the filter into the cap and screw it back in.

Aim for the bullseye. Look down in there and you'll see a black cap with a large nut shaped protrusion. Get a socket and an extension and you're set.

You can see it on the right side of the pic there (just imagine if the intake manifold was there, etc..)

thanks guys for the info for changing the oil. It was a breeze to do even tho i had to take the oil filter out with a wrench since the tools i needed were not available. All in all an easy 15 min job minus the wrenching.
