I still really want to try that K&N filter on autoanything but it does not seem productive to use a 20$ filter...

The K&N and a few different kinds of synthetic oil is on sale for 29.99 at AutoZone right now.

I'm just wondering if the 52 will be OK to use on Mom's Cavy and still use only 4 quarts of oil

HA HA HA I looked up Wix filters just for shits and giggles and there is an auto parts supplier within 5 minute walking distance from my house that sells them

Update::

I drove by the place that "sold" the filters. Turns out I found a machine shop with an engine dyno and everything within 5 minutes walking from my house, but in no means a retail store.

So I looked at the Wix web site again, found this little "rinky dink" store in Feasterville-Trevose, PA that sells Wix filters so I stopped by on my way to the mall. There was 5 51040 size filters on the shelf. They look to be constructed very well so I'm happy. I'm going to be changing my oil on Wednesday after I do the water pump (too damn cold out to do it today, when Wednesday's going to be 40*) if I feel up to it. I'm doing this after work, so it depends on how I feel. I might just change the oil first, then do the pump

i noticed a slight amount of low end sluggishness, with that filer. if i recall its the filter that comes in the 3800's, and i usually got the mobil-1 M-101 and tried the M-201 (longer).....it just didnt feel right...my engine was very sensitive as well, i could feel if i had too much oil in the engine, or too little......and with that longer filter, the engine just barely had a laggy feel to it.

im sure it filtered just fine though.

I think you were just thinking that in your head. the filter will do no performance gains or loss to your car

no i wasnt "thinking that in my head", remember how the filter is longer, so you have to have more oil, which is no different than over filling your crankcase. meaning there is a larger pool of oil at the bottom of your oil pan, so whenever your crankshaft splashes and sloshes through a larger amount of oil, you better believe there is parasitic properties there. Wet sump ..... think about it.....wet sump

well on an LA1 engine that doesnt require a large amount of oil capacity (4.5qt is not alot). increasing to 5 quarts will have an influence.....minimal but definitely an influence.

theres quite a few engines that are far smaller than 3.4Liters and require alot more oil. so if you think about an engine such as a 4.2 fsi v8, requiring 11 qts of oil and you over filling it with .5qts, there wont be nearly as much of an noticeable affect compared to some engine that might require 3.5 quarts and over filling .5qts.

basically the larger the oil capacity the less noticeable a small over fill will be, but the smaller a oil capacity the more noticeable a small over fill would be.

now when i was running that 3800 oil filter i was advised to increase capacity by .5 qts, if it was only supposed to be increased by .25qts then that could of been my fault and that would portray a more apparent drag on the engine.

I kinda see were your going with it.

my 2.4L takes 4.5L of oil. I use an Auto-Xtra 613-51042 filter ( its the smaller one )

i mean when it probably comes down to it.....the engine was engineered at certain specifications, and the oil filter is a certain size for a reason as well with the oil capacity.....efficiency might be the word, i dont really know.

but just cause it fits, doesnt mean its always better, its kind of like a proceed at your own risk thing, and since no one has reported any problems (that ive seen), some might believe they dont have anything to lose.....or gain with this oil filter.

i cant be the one to say which of the two is better, ive just kinda stated my opinion about it, since i gave this a shot on two oil changes, and really the only logic i can induce is the parasitic drag from the increased amount of oil in the sump. one thing that could probably cause an affect is a decrease in gas mileage.......and what i believe to be power loss.

Redog- have you been running 5 quarts for a while now? you dont have to do this for me but, once of these oil changes i suggest putting exactly 4.5qts in with the oem size filter, and let us know if you noticed a difference.

lol .5 quart isnt gonna make much of a difference at all. the 52 is basically just easier if you do your own oil changes, you can just dump all 5 you buy in without worrying even tho the extra wouldnt even hurt on a 47. Smae with the 2.4, the 46 interchanges with the 61 in the same way.

Oh, and the only filters I would ever run are AC Delco, Motocraft, or Wix. ACD cause i've never seen any problem with the even with idiots and 7000 mile conventional changes, Motocraft cause I happen to own a Ford right now, and Wix just seem good. At work when we dnt have a ACD for a vehicle we call up town and get a Wix from someplace and use that.

I was putting in the 4.5 quarts of oil, until one day I watched my mech do an oil change on a GAGT and he put in 5 quarts.

I asked him about the extra 1/2 quart or pint of oil and he said that it doesn't make a difference. I've been buying the 5 quart jug at Walmart and been putting that in ever since.

Bottom line, one extra pint of oil isn't going to matter. An extra quart, then we can be talking about a problem

Similar situation. I've been using the 47 (or comparable version) and just put in 5 rather than measure out that last half. I believe it is 4.5 in the crankcase but then the filter and all other components are filled as well.

Wish I would have seen this. I just changed my oil this yesterday morning. I would have done it too

Might be special order from most places or call around.

Or just add one to your next Rock Auto order.
