yeah Im pretty positive on that one..its a love/hate relationship really, it does everything it says it does but it can get expensive..I usually pay around 50 bucks for 5 quarts...but in the long run I go 5-6k miles on an oil change and I havent had any problems

Hate to dig up an old thread but......

How are you guys running the rotella T liking it still? I'm getting ready for an oil change and found a gallon of it is cheaper then good dino oil and half the price of mobil 1.

Oh, and the emission controversy. Its zinc. It was added as an anti wear additive. It forms a thin surface film on metal surfaces (similar to moly), forming a barrier between metal surfaces. Its still on the cyl walls when the piston heads down towards bdc and some burns off during combustion. Its the zinc oxides that kill the cat. This is the reason flat tappet cams are no longer used (they wear out without high zinc oils).

As far as I know shell reformulated their diesel oils to be zinc free a while ago when the feds made them.

Oh, and does anyone know of a filter that fits the LD9 that is longer than stock?

Any competent mechanic will tell you otherwise. I would never run generic oil in my engine, nor any engine I was paid to work on. as for synthetic vs conventional, it's a matter of preference. Synthetics does a better job, and lasts longer, however is quite expensive. I personally use Mobil clean 5000 conventional (but don't believe them when they say it'll run 5000 miles, that's garbage), but if your car runs on synthetic do NOT switch it to conventional, that would be a very bad idea.
