Car Shuts Off

Hey fellas, its been awhile, I try keeping myself away from this site because everytime I come here I end up modifying my car and thus lose money. Anyways 2 nights ago I was driving home and my car hit about 3,000 rpms and it started i guess you would say grabbin. I would give it gas and it would take a second befor the car acted like it got gas.

After about three miles the car shut off similar to the way it does when you run out of gas but the steering wheel didnt lock up and I had plenty of gas. I called one of my buddies to come get me after trying to crank it a couple of times. I sat there for a second tried one last time and hit the gas and it started made it home.

Drove it the next day no problems until at night and the same thing happened. I drove it again today and not really any problems. I notice when I slow down or stop at stop signs or stop lights and give it gas it acts like it doesnt want to go. At first I thought maybe my hot wire to my battery was loose or something or something was wrong with the alternator because the battery light comes on when it "dies." But im begining to think its a fuel issue. Its a 2000 GLS 166,000. Any ideas?

When was the last time the fuel filter was replaced? Sounds like you've got a serious clog

Well today I changed my fuel filter and bought some of that cleaner stuff you pour into your gas tank and she's riding like she use to. No problems and it cranks up instantly now. Thanks Man!

FYI, I change my fuel filter every year at inspection. A little bit of overkill I know. I used to change it every 18 months but kept forgetting, this way I know it's every year.

bad news it shut off again tonight. Im hopin that was just some left over "gunk" that was between the filter and engine already. The car cranked up right away however I didnt have to try multiple times.

could be the fuel pump going bad...I just had to replace mine, something you could fix yourself in an afternoon.

Check fuel pressure first (car running). Also press the button on the fuel pressure gauge and let the gas flow into a container... should be 15oz in 15 seconds (volume is as important as pressure).

Good place to start.
