concerns about removing cat converter
i took my cat converter off like 3 months ago, but i was wondering if that would hurt my car in any way? it sounds louder which is what i wanted, but people have been telling me that it'll screw up the computer since the "service engine" light is on all the time. is that true? what can i do to remove the light?

it has something to do with the o2 sensor if i remember correctly, it wont hurt your car but if you get caught with it like that you will be fined hefty, atleast in new york

Get a high-flow cat. Your car probably sounds like crap without it.

Yeah you're in big trouble if you get caught.
A car with no cat has a certain kinda of smell, at least I've been told. In fact the shop that did it could be fined too. Get a high flow cat put on ASAP. Do even think about getting a straight pipe with a cat shell, they can tell that too, they tap it and it sounds hollow, you're in trouble.
The O2 sensor will set a SES light with anything other that the orignal cat on it. You can get an O2 sim from www.pfyc.com which will tell your PCM that everything's OK. A car with an ses light on, will fail inspection in PA, and I'm pretty sure that in all 50 states a car will fail inspection without a cat on it

i just helped my friend take the cats off his Z and he told me that if he gets caught, they will fine him for around 250$ and then report you to like an environmentalist group who could then sue you for anything between $10-15k

my roommate just took his car through emissions with no cat and passed. They just looked for a fuel cap, hooked up the OBDII and since it didn't throw a code he passed

WI doesn't have a check either! woohoo, they sound ludicrous in some areas (not passing for having after market lighting present, etc. :S).. but I'm sure there are a plethora of ways to get unlucky and have a cop figure out..
Like say they pull you over for loud exhaust and decided to look under the car.. no cat = uh oh.
Do what they all said, replace it with something better, but for sure put one on soon.

You don't need it. Get the Magnaflow high flow cat. They are OBD2 certified and will not throw a SES light, therefore you will not need the 02 sim. I know this because I have a Magnaflow cat and it has not ever thrown a SES light, and it's been on my car for over a year now.

if there is no inspection then i wouldnt really worry about it. its throwing a code becase the downstream o2 isnt getting a reading. however, that has no effect on performance of the engine. the sole purpose of the downstream o2 is just to check to make sure the cat is working.
