I have thought about doing that. The Napa I used to work at repairing small engines has a guy that rebuilds starters and alternators. I thought about seeing if he could build a salvage yard one to output a little more than stock. probably 120 or so, that is unless the van ones fit. I'm not 100% sure that they do.

If he's a true specialist, he'll know, ask him.

Then have him rebuild the van one to even higher output *grins*

I could do that but if i went over 120 amps wouldn't i have to upgrade the factory wiring?

I'd upgrade the factory wiring even if I DIDN'T upgrade the alternator ...

You're leaving some voltage and some current capacity "on the table" with factory wiring as it is.

The Big 3 and a larger fusible link / megafuse will handle it, though.

Besides, do remember that the alternator will only put out as demanded ... it doesn't just shove 120A or so into the wiring, that just means it can supply up TO 120A.

Those were probably rebuilds.

Don't have to worry about upgrading the alt. Factory one handles my subs just fine with all accessories on and no dimming of the lights at all. That put my mind at ease. I am a college guy with not a lot of money.

I told you man. You have to be pushing out at least 1000-1200 watts constantly for your alt to die. A 400watt amp is a joke to an alternator (no offense).

Now get out there and thump that trunk! haha.

Oh it's thumping. Huge improvement over my old equipment. Now my car sounds aftermarket. I posted a thread with pics and a video if you want to look

Ordered my new Remy alt along with a new belt, tensioner, and both idlers off rockauto for $220. That also included 2 new lift supports for my wife's trunk on her Impala. It's never a good thing when the trunk falls down causing the latch to smack her in the head.
