thermostat housing water line

Ok, gang. New question. When you are on the driver's side of the car, looking under the hood at the thermostat housing, there are two lines coming out of it. One goes left and the other goes right. The one that goes left takes across the front side of the motor and over to the water pump. The one that goes to the right hooks into one of the heater hoses. My question is about this second hose. At the far end of it, where it connects to the heater hose, there is a piece of plastic about 2 inches long, and the heater hose connects to this plastic piece. What happens if you break the plastic piece while you are trying to take the heater hose off? In other words, what all do you need to fix it? I'm only asking, because this isn't covered in the Haynes manual.
