Hey guys, hows it going? Looking at getting a 2 door Alero around the first of the year. Hopefully it will be a good winter car. I was talking to a few people about them on another forum, one who didnt like them and one who did and they said this...
FWD sucks. I was looking at buying a coupe back in 2000. I test drove one and it was OK but I hate FWD with a passion and bought an Xtreme instead. My Fiancee had a 2000 Olds Alero sedan. It was the top of the line GLS model with leather, 3.4 V6 and all the toys. The intake gaskets suck on these. GM's dexcool eats them up and you have to replace them about every 40K miles. Her car had it replaced at about 44K or something like that. It also had lifter noise. We ended up trading it in on a new Jeep Wrangler. It was an OK car with decent power but I think it was just starting to have problems and would have gotten a lot worse. The AC compressor sounded like it had gravel in it when you started it up in the last few months she had the car(bad bearings I'm sure). Good luck if you do decide to get one.
Depends on personal preference, if the FWD car is fast then I don't mind driving one. Ever drive a Grand Prix GTP or a Caddy with a northstar, they make you appriciate FWD.
GM did have problems with the LIM (lower intake manifold) gaskets on the 3400, however they have released a new gasket that is suposed to fix the problem and from what I have seen, it is working.
From the looks of the picture I would guess that it is a lower model, based on the chrome trim around the windows, so my guess would be that it is a 4 cylinder. Ecotec is a better engine than the 2.4L, but the 2.4L is a decent engine as well. 3400 V-6 will get about the same milage as a 4 cylinder though, so get a V-6 if possible.
So hopefully I can find a nice V6 with low miles, just seems hard to find one around here with low miles.
