hello, i'm new to the site, and new to aleros.

i just bought my alero a day ago and am very happy with it, (mind you that i was driving a 90 cavalier )

anyways on with my question, i think my a/c is leaking, the compressor turns on and stuff, but the air doesn't seem 2 get cold. so i was just wondering if it is leaking, will it do any harm to the compressor, or in that case anything else. I read all kinds of other post on how 2 fix it, i just don't got the money right now. thanks for all the help.

FYI: its a 02 alero 2.2 ecotech 5 speed

I think the compressor will automatically shut off and not run at all once it reaches an extremely low level of freon.

I think the same...it should just not turn on...first guess would just be to recharge the a/c unit.

if it needs 2 be recharged, wouldnt that mean its leaking???? or does it just go bad after awhile???

thanks for all the help

The coolant is what lubricates the system as well so if it does get real low and doesn't shut off you can damage the comp.

And yess, it can mean its leaking but it can also just need to be recharged. It will always "leak" to a certain degree since it is a gas but the rate of evaporation is the question.

once the a/c gets low on charge the a/c compressor will automatically not turn on. the pressure sensors built in to the system will tell the bcm to not run the compressor to avoid damage. the best thing to do is to get it recharged and have dye added to the system and have it checked for leaks at your local GM dealership.
