So I was calling around for some new tires and after giving the tire size to the two places I called they told me I had the performance Alero? being a semi newbie I've never heard of this. What does this mean? just that the tire size and wheels are bigger (16" instead of 15"'s)? anyone?

well the GX or base Model came with 15 inch steel wheels and all the other models come with 16 inch alloy wheels. I wouldn't call them performance, but if you have the 16 inch wheels I guess you could consider your car the sportier model since it probably has the V6.

mine is a gl with 15s, but they're not steelies.

I got the GLS with 16s

It is a "Performance" package with the bigger wheels and the suspension, however the springs and sturts are the same on all Aleros. The OEM 16" tires are performance tires of some sort, but they suck anyway

Thanks guys I kinda figured if was just a tire and wheel combination.

Redog you said suspension.. what's different?

Again thanks

Nothing, but it says on the window sticker "Perfomance suspension package" but only on the GLS's  It's just a gimmick

The only thing you they really need to know thought is the rim size if its a 15 or a 16 inch
Their is a different few strut and spring package for our cars. I just found this out well looking up OEM parts for a project in my estimating class. The only thing you they really need to know thought is the rim size.

Sorry to jake this thread for a post or two. But all aftermarket Struts are the same but GM has three different set ups that came on the cars 99 (GM# 22064731)came all the cars except for the sport package (GM# 22064770)
00-04 all cars with the 2.4/2.2 came with sport package (GM# 22064770) and the 3.4 aleros came with (GM# 22064788) Just thought you all might like to know. Same thing with the control arms two different ones.

So is there any ride height difference between the regular and the "sport" suspensions? My wife's 02 GLS has the sport package and I'm thinking of putting Eibach's on it, but would it still be lowered 1" up front and 1.5" in the back, or would the difference be less?

if there is any difference (which i doubt) it is minimal.

the spring makes the car lower, not the strut. since you are changing the spring then yes you will get that result, if not a little more after they settle.

So wait, the "sport supsention" shows up only on the GLS, but it really isnt anything? because ive seen that on a few in the lot when i was looking for mine (GLS V6 16" polished)

Wrong.

15 Inch rims are also on GL and an option on the GL2. However the GL2's (and GL3's) probably got the 16 inche ones. GLS had polsihed rims 16 inch standard. I think the GX even has rims if it had the "Sports" package

Heh, Redog....I think on the sport suspension, they tighten the strut tower mounts about 3 lbs tighter :thumb:

i'm still under the belief that i have the "franken-alero"

its a GX with a V6. no special features of any kind, except the bigger engine.

i've never really compared my suspension to others (besides lowered ones) so i have no clue if i'm "sport" or not.

but i do have the "performance" tires. and redog was right... they blow... :glare: ...big nasty chunks.

i have the gl2, and it has sport suspension and 16 inch painted alloy rims. im curious of the actual differences between the ride height, if any.

Sport package got you slightly stiffer springs and a little thicker swaybar, plus the bigger wheels, different tires and all that jazz. Ride height was 5.0" on all Aleros.

That is correct. The GX sports package came with a spoiler and 15 inch alloy wheels.

performance tires? what ones would those be? Anyway, factory tires on domestics suck 99% of the time.

And how sure are you that it's a GX? Sounds like a GL to me. GL can have pretty much every option. Base Alero, but because of the V6, it's a GL.

Yeah, my car came stock with Eagle RS-As. I could turn onto another road at like 10mph and they would squeal. My car (a GL2) came stock with 16" alloy wheels. If I'm not mistaken, the earlier year GLs and stuff came with 15" alloy wheels and in either 2001 or 2002, Olds went to 16" alloy wheels.

Hey Cherry, you've got a GL, trust me.

The easiest way to tell between the models is this. GX has hubcabs and no power windows, only offered with a 4 banger. GL, regardless of 1 2 or 3 has the actual wheels 15 or 16 depending, with power windows and so on. The V-6 is an option available on the GL. GLS come standard with the shiny wheels, v-6 and leather.
so if you have armstronged powered windows, you have a GX, if you have power windows and no leather, you have a GL, and if you have everything, you've got a GLS.

another thing i think i have noticed between the gx and i think gl2 and above models is the color of the mirrors, and the break away mirrors i believe, mine on my gl2 are painted silver with the car with break away mirrors, my friend who has a silver gs , his mirrors are black and not break away, but i might just being seeing things in the wrong way

rowdygls
12-15-2005, 10:19 PM
the mirror change actually happened mid way thourgh 02. my gls came with the black one piece mirror and my g/f brother's car which was gl came with the silver break-aways. both cars were 02's about 4-6 months apart.
