i just got remote start for my alero, and i know i'm going to have to disable the "remove key only in reverse" thing. i tried doing a search and couldn't find anything on the topic. So does anyone know how to disable it????

It is quite easy actually.

Take off the plastic piece around the Shifter ( undo the two button snaps on the leather boot and pull up on the plastic piece, you can't be scared to do this it does just come off, then unclip the ETS button. and finish pulling the plastic piece right over the shifter)

After you get that plastic piece off put the car into Reverse (it should already be there if the key isn't in the ignition). without the key in the ignition and the shifter in reverse look down on the right side of the shifter. there should be an orange plastic piece attached to a cable. This it the cable that is making you have to put the car in reverse to take the key out.

Now with it still in Rev. remove the orange plastic clip from the shifter. it's just clipped on, no screws or anything. once removed you will no longer need to put the car in reverse to take the key out.

I have a 5 spd also and i just put a remote start in about 2 months ago so if you need any moore help just let me know.

oh yeah don't worry about that calbe left sitting there. it won't do any harm and you can just forget it was ever there.

Good luick with the install

right on man, thanks for the help. I'm installing a 2 way pager alarm and starter, is there anything else i should look out for when installing this?? i have installed car alarms before, but not starters.

well I'm not sure how the alarm works but i do know you need a Passlock 2 bypass module for the starter to be installed. and I would suggest getting some extra wiring and mounting the "BRAIN" first. that way you will be able to hide it nicely. and the extra wire will be because they never put enough wire in the package. that's all i can think about at the moment but let me know how it goes.

Good Luck

alright, so i got pretty much everything hooked up, i can get it to ready mode, the car will stay running when i get out of the car, but when i try to start it back up with the remote, it will turn over and run for like 1 sec then die. I think i might need to hook up a second ignition wire. i donno. but the car does run without the key, so i donno. maybe i hooked up the passlock bypass wronge. I spent the last 12 hours trying 2 make this work, and its starting to drive me nuts!

bassboss u got the same car as me, what wires did u use??? maybe pics aswell. if i got a better wiring diagram i dont think it would be that bad. but i just picked up some stuff using search and google, not an actual diagram. anyways man, if u can help me out that would be great.

early start on that how-to :thumb:

ok I had this same problem when i first finished my install (or thought i finished) the problem i had was that i forgot to hook up the Status Out wire from the Starter to the Status in Wire from the Passlock Bypass modual.

I don't know what kinda remote starter you have so i couldn't tell you what the wire color would be. If you have the install guides you can look them up.

Let me know how it goes!!!

Hope with a manual tranny you have some other way to make sure the car will not roll away when on a hill. The emergency brake is not designed to hold the car.

Don't worry about that. After all GM called it a Parking Break for a reason.

It's called an EMERGENCY brake, not a parking brake ;)

(been there, done that)

Anybody can correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't the owners manual for the Alero specifically call it a PARKING brake.

Anyways, How is the install coming Steve-O?

the parking break switch is under the center console under the handle if you needed to connect anything to that switch

alright well, i got everything working and figured out, turns out i did have everything hooked up right, and it was the passlock 2 bypass module that was f***ed. Thanks for all the help bassboss and everyone else.

as for the e-brake thing, if you turn your tires towards the curb like your supposed to, you car isn't going anywheres. and if i really didn't feel safe, i would just leave it in gear, don't gotta use the car starter every time.
