I have done several on my 4T60-E HD, however, never on the 4T40-E, the fill point for the trans is the little red cap im assuming... Just dropping the pan on the Alero though. How much fluid should I buy? Filter as well? The 4T60-E has a reusable gasket, does the 4T40 as well?
Thanks!

sure it's a 4t40e and not a 4t45e?
also, unless you live in an exceptionally dusty or humid environment, you shouldn't need a tranny fluid change till 83,000 km (50,000 mi) according to the manual, unless you drive really hard.
Not sure on a typical fluid change, but from a complete overhaul, the capacity is 9.0 L, or 9.5 Quarts AT Fluid.

Thanks, yes its the 45 hehe, was thinkng of my 60-E hehe
It gets gravel drove often enough, plus its had trans issues alot before last time the fluid was black at 50,000 GM replaced the valve body even though im sure it needed way more than that as it still doesnt shift right..
I have a good extended warranty on it, thank god.
But I belive in good maintence, and thats what i would consider this, even though, potentially, it could cause other issues, however its not like im going to flush it all out..
should be intresting though
Thanks!

4T40 fill is 7 quarts & to check if the level is proper there is a small plug on the side of the transmission behind the oil drain plug. To check proper level start the car & shft into various gears then unscrew the plug & the trans. fluid should be either level to the hole or slowly draining out. If it is pouring out let it pour until the fluid slowly comes out.
PS: Do not do this after the car has been driven & get the car jacked up & as level as possible.Remember to use Dextron 3
Yes: the 4T40 gasket is reuseable

12.1 quarts in all. dropping the pan is 7 quarts sometimes more, the rest stays in the transaxle and all that poop.
what you can do is buy 14 quarts, drop the pan, fill up 7 quarts with new fluid, run the car for a sec, drop the pan again, and fill in with the other new 7 quarts.
thats what i did, and i run royal purple.

ummm its not really recomended to do this at home, but i guess yo ucan get away with it.
umm i take it yoru gonan try this at home and you dont have a lift. what you'll have to do is jack the frotn end up, go under the car, un bolt like.... 8 bolts, and watch as 7 quarts just slam you in the face, then. put back on the pan then, pour in 7 more quarts of your fav fluid. start the car, let it idle, maybe put it in gear, let it drive for a bit, maybe get it up to 100, and watch the wheels spin. (o-60 in 2 seconds :P), and then shut the car off, take the pan off again, 7 quarts of hot fluid in your face/driveway, then put the pan on again, and pour in 7 more of your fav fluid, and your done.

When you pull the side plug to check fluid level make sure the engine is running and trans is semi warmed up, ie, pan should be warm to the touch.

You can't do a true tranny flush at home by yourself without the equipment.
I would take it to a place such as Grease Monkey.

right and to be honest, some places wont do a true tranny flush either, so im just telling you like it is. the way they usually do it.
the other way is to take a huge vacuuming machine and it vacuums out a majority of the fluid, maybe a quart or 2 more than just dropping the pan.
you can never get 100% of the fluid out of yoru transmission. manual or auto.
