View Full Version : Just Wondering...

Ever since i got my alero, I had a great idea, "what if I could display motion pictures on my hood???" I haven't found anything like it nor seen any cars like it... I have seen cars with a clear spot in the hood with neon lights.... but I was wondering if anyone thinks this is plausible.... I think it would be awesome... I'm not meaning a tv screen and stuff, I mean like it glows in the paint job... like it would be soo cool to have moving ghost flames on my hood..

..... umm... you could do the glowing paint, but it's not gonna move unless you're inebriated.

You could always be the first to have a squishy gel-pack inserted into your hood, though. Then you could poke the center and all the swirly goo will squash around and look neat.

I'll come out of the woodworks to second that one!

you guys know those "moving pictures" at the mall that are actually just intricate light fixtures? More like Murals with lights behind them and the water in the picture looks like it's movig (ripples, waterfalls, etc)

I think he meant those.

Dude, I really don't think it's a good idea. Those things are fragile. If these aren't what you were talking about, then you need to lay off the smack.

I guess you could do it with fiber optics. Or some kind of electrification... or just slap a projector to your windshield. lol

:pissed: ok well I guess it's a crappy idea. nevermind then. I'll figure it out someday. :pissed:

:pissed: :shout: one more thing... I'm just trying to come up with something that will seperate my alero from others... I don't want one like everyone else... all this neon lights, body kits, and crap.... I want mine unique..... different... so I'm just trying to see if different things would be plausible... there's no need to smack someone's idea down like that... :pissed: :shout:

Welcome to the wonderful world of forums. No matter what forum you goto.. there is going to be haters, likers ..etc But if you want to be unique.. Be sure to look to spend MAD cash into the alero. Hell.. I'm 3 yrs into my build almost done, but quite yet. Spent 16k so far. (which i could have a really nice vehicle if i add in the price of my car new at 22k +16k = a really nice luxury car)

very true, but once you spend all that money and mod your car to fit your personality.... then I think it's worth it... and to you it will be worth more than those "newer" cars.

It's not a bad idea, it's just hard to do properly. Google 'flexible lcd', that might give you some ideas, although that technology won't be readily available for a couple of years. Also, mounting stuff like that in your hood could be dicey as the engine heat and electomagnetics generated could make a mess of the set up. 2 approaches come to mind; laying something out on a surface or doing a cut out and making a window for the display. Either way sounds like a lot of body work to make it seem 'built in'.

use holograms!

OLED technology might be a possibility for something like this.

ok, not sure how this works, but as close as I can come up with is double layered "pearl ice" effect in the paint.

I'm not a paint/bodywork expert, but the concept of pearl ice is like micro glass-shards mixed in to the surface color that shows a color, design or pattern that's layed on as a basecoat beneath. Talk to someone that does super custom paint jobs and see if this is even possible.

1) base layer, flame paint in pattern "A" in a dark scheme
2) next layer, flame paint in pattern "B" with pearl ice mixed in a lighter scheme
3) top layer, your primary finished color with pearl ice mixed, and dusted on light coat.
4) clearcoat the whole thing.

in effect, from different angles, the flames on the different layers should come through to give somewhat of the effect you're looking for, because the layers that show through will vary at different points.

No idea if it will work, talk to the experts.

I think it could be very possible, just do something like what cherrington did to his ashtray (oldsmobile sign, blue light) What i mena by that is you could take your car somewhere and get the design you want cut perfectly into your car. Get you a set of neon light or fiber optics or leds and put them in the door, have a buddy help hold them in place until dry, you could prolly even use clear silicone, Then you could buy some sort of paint that is not see through during the day but lets light through at night ( like the tint paint made for tails)

Anyways to sum it up, i guess if you really were serious about doing it there is prolly a way, it may cost alot but you could do it. I'd like to see it done.

Good idea, very unique. And hey if you do it and it looks good, prepare for some zine covers. :thumb:

i agree with most of the others, it's a stupid idea.

Well I"m just looking for something different... I like still graphics, but I would like to see if I can get motion graphics.... But I might end up just going fiber optics.... maybe graphics that change colors or something.... Not really sure yet... But honestly, no idea is a stupid idea unless it's been done and proven to be stupid, so you can't really say it's a stupid idea... therefore you people who say it's stupid, your opinion doesn't matter to me... but thanks for the input everyone.

wow... something like that is gonna cost an assload of cash. from what i've read from your hood daydream, your probably gonna end up with fiber optics under your hood. and i don't think they'd be able to withstand the heat. either way your looking around twice the cost of the car in the hood alone.

i'm not bashing ya here.... it'd be one HELL of a custom job... i just don't think its feasible.

cyber knight and naich have good suggestions... pretty decent technology right there. as with albino....

my suggestion would be a series of led's under the hood. have some sort of cut out (like your flame idea) and fill the cut out in with plexi. (so you'd be able to see through it)

if you set up different colors of led's and connected them into some sort of controller (like one from the 8.1 million color led underbody kit) you'd be able cycle colors and get a wave like motion going like the flames are moving....

make sense?? maybe i'm just as hysterical as you are with mods...

thanks.... I actually think I'm getting away from the hood because of the heat problem... I'm thinking more on the doors now or possibly the back window... which could be a lot easier... I e-mailed one of my good friends that does mods and he might help me with it...

you might try to do this mod on the interior, (headliner maybe) It would still be your idea just inside not where EVERYONE could see, do you go to any shows. It will prolly score a butt-load of points if you ever get it done.

yeah, definately take pointers from rice-master. he's a car-show champion. sounds like he knows his stuff.

i just have a problem with you saying things like "prepare for some zine covers" and "do you go to any shows. It will prolly score a butt-load of points" as if you are experienced. don't say things that you have no idea about.

whiteliquid

But hey you're cool

i don't know, you look like you just got your license yesterday from you old avatar. but, hey, most 12 yr olds with erector sets have car show experience. i bet your middle name is "foose", too. lol
i'm just saying, to stick to things you know. don't just say things flippantly.

Not gonna argue on this thread, not gonna argue in general cuz it's not the point of this site. If you are so "experienced" in car shows then you would know that something like that would easily get alot of pointz at a show. Maybe not a zine cover but definately in one.

And wtf did your last comment mean, Im 12 years old yea at least i dont do dumb poop like this >"yeah, definately take pointers from rice-master. he's a car-show champion. sounds like he knows his stuff". My little 8 year old brother is more mature than you.

Keep tryin you'll be cool someday,

lol, i'm not saying i'm "so experienced". i'm just not getting the guys hopes up. things will be a lot easier in life if you take people's suggestions seriously. just trying to look out for you. in case you do go to a show, and run your mouth.

honestly, just drop it. not worth getting booted for stupidity. i just want you to be more selective with your comments.

We do have a couple car shows that roll through town. One in the Spring and one sometime during the late summer... Mainly it's just old hot rods and such... It's neat to go look at... My friend and I entered in his 1977 Jeep wrangler, fully restored. We got a lot of feedback from people... And I hear this year we are getting someone from a major car mod manufacturer... That will be sweet... So if I can get some stuff done to my car, I might enter it. Thanks for the interior idea.. That sounds like a promising thing... :yahoo:

Well... hmmm.

I saw lighted pinstriping in the ricer section somewhere, maybe Pep Boys or Advance. I really don't remember. It's basically flat EL tape. You could maybe use EL pinstriping or cut sheets. Use a light sequencer on say 3 frames for animated flames. Maybe use a few coats of transparent paint over them, and/or tie in some airbrushing. That would be your best bet, some lighted features under an airbrushed design... Talk to someone who does custom paint about the idea.
