Well I was talkin to my buddy at work today about our cars and he said that his 02 Grand Prix would probobly take my 99 Alero in a drag race. His car has the 3.1L V6 and says that year the booseted the horsepower of the motor. My car has the 3.4L engine in it and obviously I think I will win. We both have K & N air filters but I don't think that will matter too much. So when I get my car back on the road which will hopefully soon, we are going to a local drag strip to find out! Im sure we could find out on some backroad but I want it to be official and go to the track. It would make it a fun expirience finding out my quarter mile times and such.

Depends on his gearing. I drove one as a rental once, same year in fact.

Very big car, with a small motor

eh, if he's got the 3.29 gearing and you have the 3.05, he might have a shot at it, but if so, only barely.

this thing will probably get locked. for some reason, you aren't supposed to talk about "could i beat this....."
they say it leads to flame wars. but, what doesn't anymore.
i'm thinking you'll win, though. alero's are lighter than grand prix and you've got some more displacement. should be pretty close, tho.

thats EXACTLY what i was thinking when i saw the title of this thread and clicked in it to read it. But then i saw that the person who usually always locks threads for that reason has already posted in here :Noooo: .

On topic though....i think that you should beat him.

^ he didn't lock it because he's taking it to the track. :thumb:

redog, this is directly off the guidelines page.
Also, please don’t post hypothetical races… such as “Can I beat a Corvette?” Such questions spark debates and can not be answered with any degree of accuracy.

that's what i was referring to

ask me what? I haven't been like that for a long time Pat.

Why would Pontiac do something stupid like put a 3.1 liter motor in a car that size? My Impala is the same car size car, and it comes with the 3400 at least if not the 3800 like mine.

Why the hell would they? I dont know, but they sure as hell did for several years. Had a choice between a SE with a 31 or a GT with a 38. No in betweens on the Gran Prix that I'm aware of during those years. I can tell you that they DID compensate for lack of displacement with tighter gearing though. That might be the only advantage he has if any.

Hah, you're complaining about a 3100 powering a W-Body. You do know that you could get a standard ouptut Quad4 automatic in them in around '90. And in '93 you could get a lumina with a 2.2! (a 2.5 in the years before)

well, my 2.4L > stock 3.1 (I think it was a '94 Lumina). Top end for the win!

I would say your 3400 has a VERY good shot at winning at the track.

i had a 92 lumina, they've changed the 3.1-3100 over the years

the lumina had 140 horse and 185 ft. torque weighing 3328

it wasn't fast but it was fun till the tranny went

02 3.1's are pushing 175 hp, and 195 ft. torque at 3384

just a hair over the old lumina weight
