View Full Version : Time For New Muffler
The Flowmaster is starting to feel it's age and rot. Time for a new 1 in 2 out. Not looking for a whole 3400 cat-back just a good sounding muffler, nothing ricey. What's the concensus for a similar muffler but a bit more "toned down" than the 80 series Flow.
Also, anybody with duals and the Razzi rear have the cut out measurements? Center-to-center plus actual opening width would be helpful. Even more helpful if you want to sell it to me :beerchug:

40's are not louder than 80's....... i have a 40 and joel has an 80 and his car is way louder espically when driving.
i think slp and magnaflow are about on par. but slp has a rather "ricey" sound to it imo

my 4-banger sounds like that at idle, but sounds ricetastic when I rev it. why don't you rev it so we can judge you better. lol
Back when I installed my exhaust there wasn't much out there on Alero's to compare it to, so I took a chance with the Flowmaster. I can't even remember if Molson had his exhaust at the Windsor meet back then. :alcoholic: I know SLP has a reputation for being Raspy and last I heard they were only available in a cat-back. I'm looking just for a replacement muffler, transverse, single in-dual out. Exhaust has a noticeable difference in sound between the 4 bangers and the 3400. Even a link to a good thread would help.

a single 40 series is probably louder than an 80, but dual 40s is def quieter.

IMHO, a 3400 will sound better than a 3800 in all occasions! the V6/60 sound just sounds better.

dude, have you ever heard ANY 3800 from intense racing? a 3400 will never sound like that. ever. the white GTP dyno ranks up there in my top 10 best sounds.

Well, post a link to a sound clip then. I've heard one 3800s that sound nice at idle, but none on acceleration. Then again that's totally personal opinion. Heck, aside from the turbo sound, even the old 3.8s (like the GNs) just sound bad to me, as well as the 4.3s and about any 90° V6. I honestly like the way my 3400 sounds, albeit a bit loud. I've had many people tell me it sounds like a much larger engine.

true, i mean, you wont find an intense 3800 without a turbo, otherwise they wouldnt be running from 9's to 12's in the quarter.
but the WOT sound of the 9 second GP is amazing, the idle isnt too great.
as for the 3400, idle sounds great, but WOT isnt all that great.
http://www.intense-racing.com/video/INTENSE_Record_Dyno.wmv
any FWD sedan that can run 9's in the quarter is fine by me, and it's said that they'll be in the 8's later this year. for a huge beast like the grand prix, that's pretty impressive.

and yea, i realize i'm comparing the 3400 to a race built engine, but if you want to get real technical, no american v6 has ever really sounded good.
now a european 6 cyl, that's a different story.
Cliff8928

Not to get too far off topic, but i don't think you can really tell what that GP sounds like if it has the hoses hooked up to the exhaust. On the other hand, I kinda liked the big-cam idle. Turbos do sound good though. European 6-cylinder cars usually tend to all sound fairly similar for the most part, usually really smooth and refined. Same with some japanese engines.
Figure this for a built 60°V6 (not a 3400, but a hybrid engine with the iron heads) for the sound 3rd through 5th inside the car.. http://www.turboz24.com/Files/Exhaust_1.wav
Based on the responses, I considered picking up an Intense GP, but ended up going with the Magnaflow due to budget constraints.
First start up I wasn't even sure it turned over that's how quiet it seems compared to the Flow. Give it a couple weeks to break in and it might get close, but the interior resonance is next to nothing. Outside still sounds good though. I wish I took some before & after sound clips but the rotted Flow was so noisy it sounded like a helicopter was landing on my trunk.
WRX with exhaust has got to be one of the better sounding "non raspy" imports I've heard.
Cliff8928
04-29-2006, 03:06 AM
The WRX sound is inherent to the Horizontally opposed engine as far as i know. Raspy isn't all that bad... even dragsters are raspy.
I even found a clip of my 3400 exhaust before i added another muffler (there was a flange leak too)

R32 > VR6 > WRX > VQ > All other imports
edit: and by imports i mean affordable sport/compact/sedans
edit2: and by VR6, i specifically meant 12V VR6, not the 24V, but the 24V is nice too :)

Now for some reason I love the G35 and/or FX45 sound, it's unique. And for the "affordable" part, and keeping somewhat on-topic for this forum, the Ecotec does have a nice smooth refined sound to it. Even the Twin-Cam can sound nice if you put the right exhaust on it (Like Oldsman's). Then again, more totally subjective stuff here.
On another note, I picked up a new muffler for the Alero, for some reason I don't think the pace car muffler is going to last all that much longer (cheap construction), It wasn't really designed for every day use anyways.

I should have asked for my muffler(s) back both times. They probably ended up being re-sold (how about a rusty muffler for that rusty firebird?).
