Brake Problems

If you know anything about brakes please take the team to read all of this, cause i am really lost and need suggestions of how to fix.

Ok this might get long first all but i want to make sure i have this explained well so that someon can help me out. 6 weeks ago i installed R1concepts drilled/slotted rotors. I have previously changed my front brake pads to ceramics but not the backs. I forgot this is what i had done when i put the rotors on or else i woulda put new on the back then. Anyway, after installing the rotors whenever i was driving i noticed that both of the rear brakes were making a strange noise. The best way i can describe this noise is like when you were little and put a baseball card in the spokes of your bicycle. So my first thought was ...well the back brake pads are bad and the little squeaker thing is clicking over the slots rather than squeaking. So i go to change the back brake pads and i find that there is nothing wrong with my rear pads. So i go ahead and change the pads to ceramics to cut down on break dust. After changing the pads the noise was gone. The only dif between the pads was that the new ones were tapered on the edges and the others came to 90 degree angle. So i thought this was why it was solved. Well a week after changing the pad the noise is back and i have no idea what it is.

NOTE: I dont hear it so much when im just driving down the road now with the new pads but when i hit the brakes it gets loud.

You're 100% sure its the rears? Did you bleed the system when you installed the new pad and rotors, front and rear?

Not sure man, but you could be on to something with how the new ceramics were tapered and it did make noise. Could it be now that they are worn a little they are no longer tapered and have formed a 90 degree angle, so they have again started the noise? I don't know just food for thought!

i have the same exact problem as you!!!
what i think is going on is, the ceramics are a little too hard for the rotors. instead of braking, they just click across the tops of the rotors. i'm going to put on some semi-metallic pads and see if that fixes anything. like you said, the current pads are fine.

do you notice any wear points on your caliper where it may be hitting the rotor? my drivers front has a little bit, and i'm thinking it might be due to the width of the rotors. not sure, tho.

Yes i am 110% sure it is just the rears. No i did not bleed the system at all. I heard this was kinda hard...And what affect would it have???

They taper on them was pretty big...like at it's lowest point i think it would be to the point where the squeaker would be hitting. So i HIGHLY doubt that has happened though. Good thought though.

2fst4u....Is your just the rears too??? See the pads that i had on the back when i first put them on were just the factory replacement ones (would that have been semi metalic) if so, they make the same noise too. However i noticed something on them when i took them off, it looked like the edges had began chipping off, on the pad to the outside of the car, the edge at the back of the car was. Then on the inside pad the opposite edge was chipping. I dont know what this means??? Anyone???

On the rotor on both sides of the rear i notice 2 lines that are probably....1/8 of an inch apart maybe a bit more. These 2 lines do not line up with anything that i can find and they were NOT there when i installed the rotors.

Someone told me that my callipers may not be releasing pressure and that it might 've been doing it for awhile but i just noticed because of the new rotors. But that makes no sense cause then my other pads would've been extremly worn AND i wouldnt that that the noise would get louder when i brake.

only my rears make this sound. the factory pads, according to a local mechanic, are ceramic. they're too hard, and start to chip away. a softer pad will minimize sound, but will have a little more dust. i haven't seen any adverse effects from the sound, it's just kind of annoying.

Factory pads are ceramic......i dont know about that. I havent seen any adverse affects either...i Auto-x'ed with it making those noise and the barkes worked GREAT (first time with those rotors too). I dont think changing the pads is going to have any affect on the noise but i dont know what else to try. So let me know if you change your pad and it's works 2fst4u.

i have the same rotors...and the same sound. like you said it only makes the sound when you step on the brakes....and on mine its actually pretty quiet. i only really notice the sound when i'm next to another car or a wall that the sound can bounce off of and even then its still quiet....and it sounds just like you described, a baseball card hitting spokes. i've had these rotors on for over a year now and its always made that sound. i've seen no decrease in braking at all because of it and i'm thinking it might just be normal with drilled and slotted rotors, but i've never been in another car with drilled and/or slotted rotors so i'm not 100% positive.

Drilled and slotted rotors are starting to look like their more of a problem than an upgrade.
What I have read.
*Better Breaking
*Make wierd Noises
At High speeds and when stopping.
*Pad Problems.
*chipping the calibers.
