I bought PIAA bulbs a while back and have ran them for a while, they light up a bit bitter than sylvania silverstars do, at a cost of near $80 they should

I used to see a brand called Halo on Ebay, and a coworker of mine got them, wrong bulb #, so I bought em off him cheap to try em. From close up they look bright, but as soon as you get on the road the illumination is dull as hell. Despite the fact the day I tried them it was wet roads, they were nothing near my old bulbs.

Just in case anyone is considering trying them out, they are rated 100w/180w

the output wasn't great, the only positive if you could count it is the change of color and brightness from close up

I'll have to get some pics up sometime

the PIAA have been extensively tested and researched against the silverstars, they arent brighter, it's just what you want to think (honestly i dont think most people will tell the difference)

get phillips vision bulbs. cheap and one of the brightest out there.

i agree...... i got the phillips bulbs because i didnt want to pay the price for silverstars but didnt want stock so i figured id try them out.

they are indeed bright and they truely do have a white/bluish tint to them when u look at them in the headlight..... the light they throw on the road isnt quite as "white" but still better than stock.

I'm still sticking with my silverstars. I'll never buy anything else since I've gotten these. Plus I can get them for cheap through work.

and if you guys want silverstars get the OSRAM, not the sylvania.

Molson
05-19-2006, 02:44 PM
OSRAM is Sylvania, its the parent company.

yes, but the OSRAM are euro spec, and they are brighter

Here is a bulb ranking as was tested by AutoExpress based on bulb's beam level. I did not include every bulb there, mostly the popular ones.

1. Osram Silverstar - 96.9 (not the same as US Sylvenia Silverstar)
2. Philips VisionPlus - 95.1
3. Philips Premium - 87.7
4. Osram Super - 86.9
5. Lucas Premium Xenon - 86.7
6. Hella 30 per cent brighter - 83
7. Lucas Blue Lightning - 80
8. Philips BlueVision - 78
9. Sylvania Silverstar (US) - 77.9
10. Lucas Premium LL - 76.9
11. Motaquip - 76.8
12. PIAA Super White - 75.8
13. Ring Ice Blue (GE) - 74.8
14. Hella (standard) - 74.2
15. Osram (standard) - 73.8
16. Unipart GLB472 (GE) - 67.9
17. White Prism Orange - 65.3

The following bulbs were so poor that they were not rated and are strongly NOT recommended and mostly illegal. They either had low light or too much glare:

- Autobar Mega White
- PIAA Platinum (the most expensive bulb in the test )
- Autobar Hi Tints
- Bosch Blue
- Pro-light
- Ring Autobulb (GE standard)

and on another note, in MOST U.S. cars i would say DONT use a e-code (euro) bulb, because most U.S headlight housings are not e-code certified, but since there are aleros in europe and someone recently said that the alero has e-code cert, i dont think you'd have too many glare problems.

and most the bulbs rated there are from europe, because the e-code standards for beam patterns allow for brighters lights with less glare.

my e-codes on my gti have a cutoff that could be easily mistaken for a projector, they're awesome

so where do i pick up the OSRAM silverstars then? i'm due soon for new ones

i'm not sure, i used to have a bunch of links on that stuff but it's on my desktop in the states, im in iraq right now.

i went with the phillips because they are 7-12 bucks a pair, and the silverstars are like 40

FormulaNERD

here you go, these are the #2 on the list.

it'll be 40 bucks total for all 4 bulbs.

yeah not saying anything technical here

i've ran philip bluevision, standard oem halogens, sylvania silverstars, PIAA Extreme white plus, and now gave these a whirl.

Overall I'd still say the PIAA light up the road better, a bit better than the silverstars did, but not worth the price.

Halo's look bright close up, but as far as road driving and visibility they don't even compare, PIAA lights up the road better hands down.

When I changed from the silverstar to PIAA I wasn't too impressed, personally I noted a small change but nothing drastic enough to justify the pricetag.

So it's still basically go projectors and HID or go home hehe

Yep, I was looking at the headlights and noticed the E-Code certification. Our headlights are made in England too. They actually are a good headlight compared a lot of the junk we get in the US. They cope with the HIDs extremely well too.

you think all of them are made in england? cause im due for some new headlights period. and i was looking on ebay, and was unsure if they were of OEM decent or some off the wall company.

Ya got me, I just looked at mine and they said they were made in england, and also stamped (E11) for it's certification in england as well. I would particularly look for the (E11) marking.
