My friend and I noticed that the Alero has two filaments in the inner tailights and yet they only light up when the headlights are turned on. Is there any other purpose to the other filament in the tailight?

no but if you wanted to run a wire from your center light down to each inner tail light to the socket that has no wire going in to it you can have all your brakelights turn on when you brake....

The other filament would've been used on export cars with rear fog light(s). That and that they don't make that size bulb with a single low-intensity filament.
