View Full Version : Wheel Bearing or Axle??? HELP ME.

Ok here's the story. 2 years ago i had my right front wheel bearing and hub assembly replaced by the dealer under warranty. Then the right front wheel bearing was replaced again 3 months ago. Then 1 month ago my drivers side axle just decided to snap as i was pulling out of work one day. Well then at the same time my damn wheel bearing needed replaced again. Well now i am hearing a popping noise when i turn the wheel once again. It doens't seem to be the same as when the wheel bearing was bad...but very similar. However it also seems to have charachterisitcs that would make me think the axle that was replaced is bad/loose/or was put on wrong. I am so tired of this problem. Why is my car eating up wheel bearings. I think others have compained of this problem before also, someone PLEASE tell me what the fix is before this car breaks me. Would it do any good to go complaining to the dealerhsip that this problem is rediculous???

is it a clicking noise when turning? if its clicking noise when turning is your axle.

Ok. SEe that is what i said A month ago when it was clicking again for the 3rd time. BUt they said that because it didn't click continous while was turning and only for a brief part of the turn and only once per turn ( specifically if i back out of a parking spot and crank the wheel hard it is loud) that it was just the wheel bearing. And so they did reaplce that and the noise went away for the past month...but now it is back. Still say it is the axle.... cause i have no clue.

Anyone else have any ideas or suggestions on what i should do about this or what you think it is for sure.

im having that same problem, apparently its your CV joints that are going and thats a good $200.00 fix unless your car is still under warrenty (and thats just for one side)

correct me if im wrong guys....

CV Joint EH??? great i've never even heard that mentinoed as a possibilty...one more thing to confuse me. Maybe it's just time to start looking for a new car.

ya but the good thing is once you replace them, they last for at least 5-6 years if not more, depending on how rough you are with your can and turning sharply

most axles nowadays has lifetime warranty on them like the ones from autozone, o' reillys, napa.. etc.

Only takes 15 min to swap out. (with air tools).. no air tools about 30min- 45min. Real easy swap out. Or if you would pay someone it would be 1.5hr of labor time.

dont trade the car in for 1 simple problem.

Im just frustrated because i dont know what to replace to fix the problem. What can i look at on the axle, bearing, or cv joint to see if it has gone bad?

Look for the rubber thing on the inside of the wheel to be torn. That is probably 90% chance of being torn if it is a bad CV joint.

axle and cv joint is the same thing. Its 1 whole item.

What is the danger of driving with a bad wheel bearing out of curiousity????

Did they put an aftermarket wheel bearing in, I have seen them make the noise you are talking about. I will almost bet that your problem.
