View Full Version : Change oil light?
Well, my moronic Alero thinks it's cool for the "change oil" light to pop on after 2k miles. This happened to anyone else? And wtf?

Just remember the milage and reset the oil change light.
To reset turn on the key (dont start the car) and pump the gas pedall twice...I am pretty sure thats how you do it. I always have to try it a couple of times. Yeah our cars have a mind of their own sometimes.

You turn the key to on and hold the reset button in the fuse case in the left side of the dash (open the door first). I think it beeps or just goes away. Did mine a month or two ago.

Thats true depending on the year mine is and 04
Mine is an 04. I opened up the "Fuse Acess" thing and there's tons of shit going on in there and I don't want to fuck anything up. Should I just go get an oil change? Lol.

Just do it like I stated above and everything will be okay. Turn on key and press gas pedal twice...hold it down on the second time...then just change your oil in 1000 to 3000 miles.
How do I change it to 3k? I did the gas pedal twice thing and I just heard BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP. It shut off the light and shit but whatcha talking about changing it to 3k?

Well now you either change the oil in 1000 miles and then reset the light or run it till it tells you to change it again another 3000 miles if you are running synthetic.

the light does not keep track of how many miles your driving.
drive 3000 miles and see if it comes on im betting it wont.
the computer keeps track of the amount of "heat cycles" the engine goes threw. once it reaches a certain number is when the change oil light comes one.

OK, that'd explain it. Thanks you guys.

To reset the light, you either use the button in the fuse panel (I don't think any Ecotec cars have this, but the others do). Or turn the key on, press the accelerator pedal fully 3 times within 5 seconds and a few seconds after that you should hear a confirmation chime indicating that the oil life monitor has successfully been reset.

my ecotec has the reset button in the fuse box.

Well, I know I don't have the button on mine... Maybe it's something to do with 03 and 04s... or just GXs... I don't think i have the low tire pressure monitor either.

could be the gx thing, because i got a low tire pressure monitor. although dont think it works to good with the 17s on it.

the light is on a timer. to turn it off use the reset button in the fuse panel or turn the key to the "ON" postion (don't start it) and pump the brakes three times.

It's crazy I know,
If I don't reset mine I can go almost 2 full oil changes before it does.
I hate pulling off the fuse cover to reset it, but the gas pedal thingy worked once, but not again.
On a 2000, how many times do you pump the gas? 2 or 3?

on a 2000, it's 3 times.
And as brent said, it counts heat cycles. But you should change the oil every 3000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. (which means, a minimum of 4 times a year)

hmm, well i have a 2000 and in the owners manual it says to pop open the fuse box panel and hold the restet button until it flashes (with the key on the 'on' position) i did this three times (the first time i got the tire pressure light to go off) but the change oil never flashes, should i do it the pumping the brakes 3 times way?

haha no problem, i tried that, and it worked the first time i did it, the change oil flashed then the low tire pressure flashed and the tire light went off but not the change oil light, and every time i tried to make the oil light flash again it did not, what i did was hold the reset button, and the change oil never flashed, is there another way to do it, or should i hold the reset button for a longer time (multiple minutes??)

Just press (on a 2k) the reset button once (no pumping the throttle) with the key to the "on" position and the "change oil light" flashes then press and hold the reset again until you hear chimes and it goes out. Then the "low tire pressure" light starts blinking. Press and hold the reset button until you hear chimes and the "low tire pressure" light" goes out.

The first time I changed the Alero's oil, I couldn't get the light to turn off either by pushing the button. Then again I had no idea if I was supposed to hold it down in any sequence or if the key needed to be in acc or on. I tried several different ways and got frustrated lol.
So the next day, I stopped by a local dealership on my way home and asked the serice center techs. This guy came out, he got in the car and turned the key, then pumped the gas what seemed like 5 or so times. I heard a chime and the light was off. The next oil change I tried to mimic what he did, but didn't work.
I tried the reset button again after reading online about pushing it twice to cycle to the change oil light, and it worked. But after it was done, I found out that my dash cluster lights weren't working anymore and neither were the interior lights. I replaced one blown fuse for the interior lamps, but the other fuse for the dash was completely missing! No idea where it could have went. But plugged a new one into it and haven't had a problem yet. Weird.
I'm thinking its because I tried the key in the ACC position first.
But anyway, now for the point of my reply (and yes I know... grave diggin threads.. leave me be. It's relevant.)
Does anybody know the proper procedure for the pedal pump technique? Does it really vary depending on the year? And I never heard about hitting the brakes 3 times. Anyone have the official scoop and how they know it?
