I tried searching the site for this but couldn't come up with anything. I want to be able to play my music without worrying if I'm too loud. Do the cops actually have an spl meter to determine if you're too loud, or is it more of a cops opinion that he/she "thinks" you're too loud? Of course if my cars really vibrating and the sound is beginning to hurt my ears than obviously they'd pull me over. I also tried searching Michigans website (I'm from Port Huron by the way) but couldn't find anything. I also know that I couldn't have any bass going on after 10 or 11 at night (quiet hours). I guess it goes back to the title of this post: how loud is too loud?

Its too loud when you get pulled over for it...really it just goes by the local laws. Our city law here is that you can't be able to hear it 50 feet from the car. Of course thats just all the cops decision as if he can hear it from where he's at or not...i've got hit for it once and Kurt has a couple times even though 1 of the times it wasn't him...so pretty much just check the local laws and see what they have to say about it.

Bullshit. I rattle with stock head unit and 6x9's, lol. But it does depend on the cops.

Think again. Kid in Toronto got a noise complaint when driving down the road. He was forced to listen to some mellow music for a certain number of hours. That was his community service. It depends. I've driven past cops with music coming from my stock system and now with subs. It really does depend on the cop.

Ive never been pulled over yet, and my car is loud as hell. Im probably going deaf, but god it sounds good. lol...Im probably just a weirdo for loving that. Anyway, I have past cops all over indy, and they have never given me any problems. Of course, Indiana cops don't really care too much about anything. It all depends on your area, like everyone has stated.

thats kinda what I was figuring, that it depends on the area/cop. But just out of curiosity, I'm looking to buy a gauge that will tell me my SPL. I've seen some that you use a pointer to get a reading, but I'm looking for one that I could put in a gauge pod. Any ideas on a good place to buy one; either at a store or online?

yeeah in GH theres a sound ordinance where you cant be able to hear it 50 feet from the car, and at night its down to 25 feet...but really you can hear people talking from that distance so its kinda gay..that ATT button is the shit most definatly, i was pulled over with my stock 6/9's and the cop told me i had some pretty loud subs, and it sucks that im gonna have to pay the fine..so i popped the trunk and showed him my "subs" and when he saw that the trunk was empty he said sorry, have a nice night..no ticket for me!!

My friend who helped wire my system has 4 12" immortals, powered by rockford power amps in his grand prix. They are nice!! He's been pulled over I think close to 11 times now.
i have 2 12'' orion H2s with 2 2000w precision power amps, lol when i pull into the college parking lot all you hear is like 40 car alarms go off, maybe thats when its too loud :P i have gotten yelled at by the security of the campus but nothing from the cops here in NY which im surprized.

About 130dB inside the car is too loud. Who cares if you get the cops on your ass for being too loud. Much louder than that for more than a couple minutes and you WILL permenantly damage your hearing. 150dB I believe is instant hearing loss, you pop your ear drums basically.
