View Full Version : quick question...SES

Would excessive humidity make the SES light come on? By excessive humidity, I mean REALLY thick fog. I could not see 20 feet ahead of me.
Nothing else seems different...just the light came on. idle seems a tad rough, but it still idles at about 500 rpm.
Any insight would be appreciated. :)

It isn't beyond possibility. The MAF sensor has several wires that are made out of certain materials that change voltage resistance based on temperature. Their conductivity, temperature and resistance factors are affected by extreme levels of humidity and/or dryness. Voltage / frequency translates to flow measurement signal sent to the computer, and any drastic changes in these values will trip the SES light.

alright. seems like the fog did it then...because it was like a WALL. if I hadn't known the road, I'd have been scared.

has the code dropped or been cleared?
(did your SES light go away?)

unfortunely the 2.4 does not have a MAF so does not apply here.

probably what might had happen was you threw a lean code due to the high humidity. it should go away.

okay...it didn't go away. it's VERY dry out right now. I haven't got my fuel system cleaned all summer...could that be it?
I've noticed the rpm's drop much faster when I coast than before. Usually, when I gas it to 40mph (around 4000rpm from a stop) and then coast, the rpm's will slowly fall to around 1500 while I'm coasting. Since last night, it will drop to about 800 almost immediately. (Acceleration seems to be uneffected)

you could always disconnect your battery for 20-30 minutes and then see if that resets everything

I'll give that a shot.

light is gone. But I'll still take it somewhere to get scanned when I have a free hour.

i'm burning oil. I had a HUUUUUUGE cloud of white smoke earlier today. It looked cool and pissed me off at the same time.
Any theories as to the cause?

well it could be a number of things. first, if it is oil, it should be bluish smoke, white usually means coolant. it might be something simple like.....a head gasket lol (i guess that isnt "simple" really now is it?)

I don't think a head gasket it too bad on a 4 banger:ninja:

it is a DOHC engine, so I have to dig past the cams to get to the head...
whar are the odds that my car just decided a new pope though? lol

isnt white smoke usually associated to burning coolant? and blackish blue smoke is oil...
and, a head gasket isnt bad on these randy...unless you're completely retarded when it comes to stuff like this, then it may be rated at 2 cases of beer instead of 1 lol
what kind of mileage have you got on 'er?
AlbinoMonkeyRat

just crossed over 64000 miles last week, and it's been in a collision shop for that week up until yesterday. I think I was burning *something* before the crash though

64000 miles and smoking already? what are you doing to it?!?!?! lol
123 200miles on mine, barely burns oil, but its on its last leg now...but yours shouldnt be burning anything yet, you must have gotten something go through the fuel or something...thats not normal

also, the change oil light came on today, and I changed it a month ago, and I haven't driven all that much.
Also, I had another cloud today, coming out of the same parking lot I had a cloud at yesterday. I don't know it it's a coincidence or how I drive coming out of there. I do notice that it only happens after 4k rpms though

took it to the shop:
oil change light = false alarm
white smoke = collision shop put injector cleaner in the gas...on 1/8 tank.
so there is no problem now. it threw no codes.

good man, woulda been shitty if you needed a rebuild with that mileage

yeah, I know. the mechanic was like, "If you need a head gasket, you can get it taken care of for $2.00" I was like, "WOW!!!" And he said "because that's how much a For Sale sign costs."
hahaha

made another cloud last night...took it too the shop again. turns out my muffler holds moisture. So next spring...hehe..more debt! I'm gonna go balls out on the exhaust. Keeping the same tips though. :D
